LOVES PARK, IL (Sunday, October 12, 2008) – Mother Nature graced the Rockford Speedway with Bahamas type weather as it hosted the 17th Annual Bahama Bracket Nationals. John Paul Odegaard, Billy Robinson, Brad Warthan, and Ed Klug took home bracket feature wins in the traditional fall event.

Tony Sancinati jumped to the early lead in the 50-lap “A” bracket feature. Shaun Wiltjer would get on the inside of Sancinati on lap 8 to challenge for the lead. The two raced side-by-side for the lead allowing Matthew Clossey and Mark Pluer to join the battle on lap 10.

The caution flew on lap 13 when Darrell Garman and Kevin Franks got together on the backstretch causing debris to come off of Frank’s car and land on the track.

Sancinati would continue to lead on the re-start but was quickly challenged by Pluer for the lead. Pluer would take over the top spot on lap 14.

Pluer would have a nice lead at the halfway mark over Scott Grady and Tim Sargent. Sargent was looking for a way to get around Grady for second. But John Paul Odegaard would sneak past Sargent for third on lap 28. Odegaard would take second from Grady on lap 30.

Odegaard would catch the back bumper of Pluer with 15 laps to go with Sargent right behind him. The top three would work around lap traffic.

With ten laps to go, Odegaard would go on the inside of Pluer, but Pluer would use lap traffic to his advantage and hold on to the top spot.

Odegaard got to the inside of Pluer with five laps to go, but Pluer would use the outside lane to hold on until the caution flew when Sargent went into turn three and it appeared his right front suspension broke causing him to hit the outside wall.

The battle for the lead continued after the re-start as Odegaard still looked for a way to get around Pluer for the top spot.

On the last lap, Odegaard went on the inside of Pluer going into turn one. The two made contact and both got loose but kept going as it was a drag race going down the backstretch. The two continued side-by-side in the final turns and at the stripe it was Odegaard by a fender over Pluer.

Grady was third with Wiltjer in fourth. Ed Williams Jr. rounded out the top five.

As with each Bracket feature winner, Odegaard had to make a choice of taking the winner’s share of the purse or a trip for two to the Bahamas, Odegaard chose the cash.

Lawver held off challenges from a pair of modifieds to win the “AA” bracket feature.

Matt Doris was the early leader in the feature event. The caution flew on the second lap when Bobby Blood and Shannon Stoltz made contact causing Blood to get loose on the front stretch. Blood would spin causing a huge pileup. Many were able to continue.

Doris continued to lead on the re-start. Doug Bennett quickly moved from his 18th starting spot up to the top-five by lap six. Four laps later, he would be challenging Doris for the lead with John Paul Odegaard in tow and take over the top spot.

Odegaard would then go to the outside of Odegaard on lap 12 to challenge for the top spot. Odegaard would take over the lead on lap 23.

With 30 laps in, Odegaard would continue to lead but would be looking for a challenge from Lawver. Lawver would be able to close in on Odegaard as the caution flew on lap 33 when Bennett slowed as it appeared he broke a tie rod on his left front.

Lawver would go on the inside of Odegaard on lap 34 to challenge for the lead, but Odegaard would hold on until lap 36 when Odegaard appeared to have blown his motor going into turn one. Odegaard would hit his oil and make hard contact with the wall. Don Exline would also get caught up and also make contact with the wall. Both were done for the day. Lawver would inherit the lead.

Lawver would lead with ten laps to go, but was being challenged by Jim Hanson for the lead. Hanson would get on the inside of Lawver with five laps to go. The two raced side-by-side until Hanson would spin on his own coming out of turn two with four to go.

Lawver would cruise to the win with David Ballstaedt in second and Chris Woodall in third. It was Lawver’s fourth Bracket win and he again took the money over the trip.

Robinson cruised to the “AAA” bracket feature win.

Jarrod Sutherland was the leader as the green flag flew on the feature event. But that didn’t last long as he broke out from his time on lap three and was done. This handed the lead over to Isaac La Cour Jr.

La Cour would hold on the lead until lap five when Mike Carpenter Jr. would go on the inside of him and take over the top spot a lap later. But that didn’t last long as Jimmy Robinson got on the inside of Carpenter on lap nine and the two battled side-by-side until Robinson pulled away on lap 13.

It became a family battle for the lead as Johnny Robinson II was battling Jimmy Robinson for the lead at the halfway mark. But that didn’t last long as Johnny would pull into the infield with engine problems.

Jimmy Robinson would get a late challenge from Rick Wilson with five laps to go. Robinson would maintain a car-length lead over Wilson all the way to the checkered flag and collect the bracket win.

Carpenter was third with Jim Tate Jr. in fourth. Greg Hentrich rounded out the top five.

Robinson took the cash over the trip.

Warthan would make his trip from Sparta, WI a worthwhile trip in the “AAAA” Bracket feature.

Josh Lundy was the early leader but that only lasted ten laps as he would pull off with engine problems. This handed the lead over to Alan Bekeielewski.

Bekeielewski would get the top spot for only two laps as Charlie Frisch would pass him on the inside and take the lead. Frisch was then being pressured by Brad Warthan for the lead.

Warthan would get on the inside of Frisch to battle for the top spot with 20 laps in the books, but Frisch would take advantage of the outside groove momentum to hold on as they were at the halfway mark of the race.

Frisch would continue to lead with 20 laps to go, but officials were watching his car carefully as it was starting to show smoke. Warthan would continue to pressure Frisch for the lead.

The caution flew on lap 37 when it appeared that Herb Moag lost an engine going into turn one. During the caution, officials were checking Frisch’s car to see if he was leaking fluid. Officials determined that it was oil hitting the valve cover causing the smoke and they looked over at Warthan’s windshield and didn’t see any fluid. Frisch was able to maintain the lead.

Warthan got to the inside of Frisch on the re-start but would not complete the pass. With eight laps to go, Warthan would get his best chance for the lead as they were side-by-side. But behind them, Chad Tschan was catching up to join the battle.

But, with four laps to go, both Frisch and Tschan each broke out and this gave the lead over to Warthan.

Warthan would take the win with Bekielewski in second. Richard Nielsen was third.
It was an easy decision for Warthan as he took the money.

The final race of the weekend was the Hornet Bracket 50-lap feature.

Scott Johnson took the lead in the feature event that started 31 cars. Mike Jucius went to the inside of Johnson on lap three to battle for the top spot. Jucius took the lead on lap five.

Jucius would maintain the lead until he developed an engine problem with eleven laps to go handing the lead over to Tim Jendrycki. Jendrycki would lead until he would develop a problem with a re-start with four laps to go. Jendrycki would fall off the pace with Jim Kunis taking over the top spot.

But Klug would get by him with two laps to go and go on to the win over Kunis.

Klug will become the third driver to take the trip to the Bahamas.

Another tradition is the Fabulous Foo Foo Races for the cars that don’t make the feature.

In the “AA” bracket, it was Cory Houdek winning it on a last lap pass over Brian Kucaba. And Dan Witt won the “AAA” Foo Foo by a bumper over Al Walowski.

Greg Pruitt won the “AAAA” Foo Foo race.

The 18th Annual Bahama Bracket Nationals will take place on October 17-18, 2009.
