LOVES PARK, IL (Saturday, May 23, 2009) – Jon Reynolds Jr. held off a late challenge from Ricky Bilderback to bring home his second Stanley Steemer NASCAR Late Model feature win of the season in front of an enthusiastic holiday weekend crowd on Military Night presented by Camping World at Rockford Speedway. Doug Bennett, Dana Czach Jr. and Dwight Dunlap also collected feature wins.
Mark Hartline grabbed the early lead in the main event for the Stanley Steemer NASCAR Late Models. Kyle Shear brought out an early caution on lap four after getting loose exiting turn four and turning his machine around in turn one.
Jon Reynolds Jr. used the recently reinstated restart cone to jump up to second and quickly dove to the inside of Hartline when the green flag flew taking the lead with five laps in the books. 2008 Stanley Steemer NASCAR Late Model champion Jerry Gille and seven-time division champion Ricky “the Rocket” Bilderback would jump into the top three on lap eight.
Halfway into the feature, Brandon Eash and John Beinlich got together in turn three sending Beinlich around. Tim Slater, trying to avoid Beinlich’s car, hit the turn four outside wall ending his night early. Bilderback took the inside line on the restart and worked his way by Gille to take second.
Bilderback tried to make a move for the lead working the inside of Reynolds Jr. over the final ten laps but “Driver X” was too much for Ricky, holding on to bring home his second feature win of the season. Gille, Shear, who came from the back of the field to finish fourth, and rookie Mikie Breiner completed the top five.
The 25 lap main event for the Bargain Hunter Sportsman was full of action from the beginning as an early caution flew on lap two for a Ricky Nielson spin in turn two. Rob Goodman led the 15 car field to the line on the restart but wouldn’t hold onto the top spot for long as Butch Swinbank took over the lead on lap four.
Swinbank immediately came under fire from Brodhead, WI native Doug Bennett, and Bennett grabbed the lead exiting turn four on lap six. The defending champion in the Sportsman division, Fred Nason, and the 2008 Rookie of the Year in the class, Chris Gantz, went side-by-side for seven laps battling for third before Nason finally grabbed the spot and turned his sights toward Swinbank.
Swinbank would offer little resistance to Nason, who moved into second place with six laps remaining. Six laps wouldn’t be enough for Nason though, as he ran out of time trying to reel in Bennett. It was the first feature win of the short 2009 season for Bennett.
Gantz, Swinbank, and Brock Behnke rounded out the top five.
Dana Czach Jr. made an exciting last lap pass on Charlie Frisch exiting turn one to take home his first career feature victory in the Mtn Dew RoadRunners.
Dwight Dunlap completed the sweep in the Allison Legacy division bringing home the heat race and the 12 lap feature. Bill Fox took the runner-up spot in the main event.
