Nason Claims First Feature! Climbs Closer to Points Lead!

By: Eric Huenefeld

LOVES PARK, IL. (Saturday, July 25, 2009) -- Consistency has been the name of the game over the last several years for Bargain Hunter Sportsman driver Fred Nason. Consistent finishes coupled with multiple wins has made the driver from Roscoe very hard to beat during the course of the season in the class. This year however, Nason has had to rely solely on consistency as he found himself winless heading to the end of July at the Rockford Speedway.

But after Saturday night, Nason was winless no more.

After setting fast time earlier in the night with a blistering lap of 14.690, Nason would jump through the field from his eighth starting spot and claim the victory in the 25 lap feature as part of the ‘All Star 100’ festivities at the quarter mile oval.

Nason would make decisive moves and get to the front quickly, toiling with the likes of six-time track champion Scott Lawver and Chris Gantz, before settling into the lead just past the races’ midway point. Behind Nason, the racing was intense for second spot, between Lawver and points leader Doug Bennett. After being mired in traffic a majority of the race, Bennett had to hustle towards the front and minimize his loss in the points to Nason, who sits second in the overall standings. Bennett would charge through the field and make it to third, before going side-by-side with Lawver over the final five laps, and not moving into second until the final corner of the final lap.

Lawver would take third behind Bennett and winner Nason. Tim Dickson had a season best run in fourth, followed by Gantz.

As the summer wears on, Beloit’s Bobby Frisch continues to heat up in the Mountain Dew Roadrunner division. Frisch charged yet again from deep in the field to take his third win of the year on Saturdays in the division. It was not easy for Frisch though, as he went side-by-side with Josh Lundy and Howie Ware for the lead for six laps before finally breaking into the top spot by lap 14. Frisch would build his lead up to five car lengths before the checkers fell, with Ware chasing him and bringing home a second place finish. Kris Nilson would move around Josh Lundy in the final circuits for third, with Lundy fourth and Jason Brockway rounding out the top five.

The always exciting Central States Super Cups were apart of the action Saturday, sporting their two divisions featuring 9-14 year old “Juniors” and 17+ year old “Pros.” The Junior Division saw a dominant night from Jacob Zellmer. The 12 year old from Waterford, Wisconsin swept his division away, setting fast time, winning the heat and leading every lap of his 20 lap feature. Morgan Schissel was second, followed by Jacob Van Wazer.

In the Pro Division, the action was fast and furious, as usual. In the middle stages, a five car battle for the lead turned into a three car wreck on the backstretch, taking out contenders Jim Tremanes, Tony Velez and Steve Naples. As the race wore on, Super Cup kingpin Erik Gehrke would move towards the front and hold off the advances of Jeff Myers and Erle Hoth to claim yet a another feature win at Rockford. Jamie Clos was fourth, followed by Jamie Domski.

The Illini Racing Series Midgets were also on hand Saturday night, with New Lenox driver Allen Gillis getting his first feature win of the year in the25 lap event. Doug Orseske was second, followed by Loran Critchett Jr.

Racing continues this week at Rockford Speedway, with another Wild Wednesday. This week, its Yellowbook’s Wet and Wild Wednesday, featuring the full slate of Wednesday racing, including the Roadrunner Super Summer Series.
