Lensing sets fast time in NST Super Late Models
By Kevin Ramsell
Saturday, September 29, 2007 (Loves Park, IL) – Fred Nason won his fourth straight NSTC feature in two years on the second day of the 42nd Annual National Short Track Championships. Fred Oswald picked up his first USST Super Truck win and Jimmy Robinson won a close Hobby Stox feature.
Nason continues his NSTC streak by defending his Area Sportsman win.
Nason's Modified looked strong running the tight inside line of the Rockford Speedway. On lap 15, he got on the inside of Brock Behnke forthird. A lap later, he would work his way past Mark Hawes for the second spot.
When he got to the inside of Johnson, he had to really work at taking the top spot. Nason would get on the inside of Johnson on lap 18 and the two would battle side-by-side for six laps until Nason was able to pull away with the lead.
Nason would cruise to an easy victory while Behnke was able to work his way to second. Ron Morris had a strong run to come home third. Johnson would hold on to fourth, while Brandon Riedner had a great run coming from the 16th starting position to finish fifth.
"It was a tough deal to get through. We lost the grip on my right tire so it was a tough deal. But we were able to make it through with the win," an elated Nason stated in victory lane.
Oswald holds off Widdis for his first USST Super Truck feature win.
Oswald grabbed the lead at the start of 25-lap feature event as he started on the outside of the front row.
Bret Widdis made his trip from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan a worthwhile one. He started shotgun on the field and with ten laps to go, he got past J.C. Stanelle for second.
Widdis would get within a truck length of Oswald but not any closer as Oswald would go on to his first USST Super Truck Series win.
Stanelle would hold on to third with Jeff Babb in fourth. Bobby Yonke rounded out the top five.
Robinson held off Jim Tate Jr. to win the NSTC Hobby Stox feature.
Jarrod Sutherland was the early leader in the O'Reilly Auto Parts 42-lap feature event. Robinson started tenth with Tate right behind him in 12th.
Sutherland was leading on lap 8 when he got loose in turn one and spun in front of the field. Sutherland took Johnny Robinson II with him. Jimmy Robinson was running third at the time and assumed the lead after the caution.
On the re-start, Robinson would jump out to the lead. Tate would work his way to second by lap 12 after he passes Bobbi Bishofberger for the position.
Tate would catch Robinson on lap 23 and challenge for the lead. Robinson would hold off the numerous challenges by Tate.
On the last lap, Tate would make one last attempt but come up short at the checkers as Robinson would take the win. Chet Paffel would recover from an earlier spin to finish third by getting Bishofberger by a bumper at the finish line. Brad Luck was fifth.
Dan Lensing set the fast time for the National Short Track Super Late Models with a time of 12.910 seconds. Pete Moore won the position heat. Eddie May and Mike Beyer won the odd and even fast heats.
Matt Kocourek and former Spring Classic winner, Larry Schuler, will lead the field of 25 cars to the green flag in tomorrow's 200-lap main event.
Nason's Landscaping "Faster Than a Speeding Bullet" qualifying awards were handed out to: Dan Lensing, NST Super Late Models (12.910 seconds); Jeremy Miller, Big 8 Series (13.818 seconds); Fred Oswald, USST Super Trucks (14.433 seconds); Jon Reynolds Jr., Area Sportsman (14.756 seconds); and Jim Tate Jr., Hobby Stox (15.839 seconds).
