LOVES PARK, Ill. (Sunday, October 18th, 2009) -- John Paul Odegaard logged a lot of mileage traveling to the Rockford Speedway for this weekend's 18th annual Bahama Bracket Nationals, and for the second consecutive year, the Minnesota driver made it time well spent, finding victory lane in the 50-lap 'A' Bracket main event and collecting a TIKI Torch trophy to commemorate his win. Odegaard started in eighth and quickly worked his way through the field, pushing past Matt Berger as the event approached the halfway point and holding on from there, collecting another October victory at the high-banked quarter mile. In the 'AA' Bracket, Scott Lawver rallied back from a late-race spin to come out on top, fending off Brad Carson for the win.
The 'AAA' Bracket featured a three-way battle for the win that came down to the last lap, as Gary Kasperek had to stave off both Jeff Burrows and Scott Gardner to take the crown. The 'AAAA' Bracket 50-lap headliner included a side-by-side duel between Bobby Frisch and Dana Czach Jr. as the two drivers went door-to-door for most of the race before Frisch charged ahead at the end for the title. The Hornets' Bee Bracket Championship went to Iowa's Bryce Bailey, who eschewed the money in victory lane, becoming the fifth driver in the 18 year history of the event to select the trip for two to the Bahamas instead.
The 'A' Bracket 50-lap main event got off to an inconspicuous start when Johnny Senerchia, Mark Pluer and Danny Church came together, leading to a caution on the second lap for the multi-car accident. Jim Hanson led the field back to green as Matt Berger gained two positions, jumping to third.
Three laps later, Tom Prim lost control exiting turn four, spinning across the track and collecting Mike Lange. Tim Ellis had to stop to avoid the mangled cars and Johnny Senerchia spun into him, sending both drivers to the pits. Matt Berger took advantage of the caution to finish his charge through the field, taking away the lead with 44 laps remaining.
2008 Bahama Bracket Nationals Champion John Paul Odegaard showed his strength, making a strong title defense as he moved up to fourth with ten laps in the books. Larry Clausen and Ron Morris were battling for second when the two made contact on the backstretch, sending Clausen shooting across the track into the turn three point. Clausen walked away but his day was over with just 11 laps under his belt.
The accident allowed Odegaard and fast qualifier James Swan to move up to second and third respectively, closing up on Berger's back bumper. Odegaard wasted no time getting to the front, making his move on Berger and grabbing the lead as Swan followed him up to second. Berger soon dropped back to fourth as Shawn Wiltjer made his way up to third, setting his sights on the leaders.
Up front, Swan began pressuring Odegaard for the lead, trying to slide his Modified into first as the race approached the halfway mark. The leaders began working their way through lapped traffic as 2009 National Short Track Champion Josh Nelms dropped off the pace, relinquishing sixth place to Mark Pluer.
With seven laps remaining, James Swan received the black flag, ending his run at the win as Dave Dotter spun out on the frontstretch, bringing out the caution. Shawn Wiltjer inherited second after Swan's exit, as Matt Berger moved into third. Swan was able to return in sixth, on the lead lap, as Odegaard led the field back to green.
Odegaard had a great restart and held off Wiltjer for the victory, as Matt Berger and Mark Pluer went door-to-door for third. Berger held on for third as Odegaard went back-to-back at the Bahama Bracket Nationals. Odegaard decided to pocket the cash in victory lane, accepting the TIKI torch trophy with a smile.
"It's nice to take home another win here," stated a pleased Odegaard after his win. "It feels good to come out here and battle these guys like that, and know that we beat some great drivers. The car drove well and it came to me as the race went on. I knew we had something for them and once we got the lead I felt good about our chances."
David Ballstaedt was the winner of the 12-lap Fabolous Foo Foo Race, featuring all 'A' Bracket cars that didn't qualify for the feature. Every Foo Foo Race winner receives free entry into next year's Bahama Bracket Nationals.
Mike Nelms jumped out to the early lead in the 'AA' Bracket 50-lap Championship Feature. Nelms broke out on lap six, pushing Jim Tate Jr. into the lead. Tate Jr. soon fell victim to the breakout curse, as Bob Rohweder inherited a comfortable lead pacing the 25-car field.
Rohweder held on to the top spot as the race passed the halfway mark, while Tony Sancinati charged through the field to take second. Sancinati was challenging for the lead when he broke out, ending his day early and giving the lead back to Bob Rohweder.
The battle for second soon became a four-car fracas, as Butch Wood, Louis Ansolabehere, Jay Crichton and Brad Carson all tried to manuever into second. Wood soon exited the fray, slowing on the backstretch before exiting to the pits, allowing Crichton to find his way to second.
The caution flew with 15 laps remaining after Mark Pluer's machine blew up, laying down a trail of fluid in turns three and four. Scott Lawver and Brad Carson got into the mess, spinning wildly but keeping it off the wall. On the restart, Crichton grabbed second, which proved to be key when Rohweder broke out. Crichton inherited the top spot as Rohweder tried to get off the racetrack, flirting wtih disaster as the field bunched up behind him.
The manuever allowed Lawver to jump from third to first, using the bottom line to push past Crichton with eight laps to go. Brad Carson followed Lawver on the low line, taking away second from Crichton. Carson gave Lawver a last gasp effort to steal the lead but he couldn't get it done as Lawver, a five-time Sportsman champ at Rockford, held on for the victory.
In victory lane, Lawver decided to take the cash, collecting a TIKI torch trophy and bragging rights for the winter. "It was a tough race, especially at the end there," a happy Lawver stated after a celebratory burnout. "I had to make it through that spin, and then the car started pushing the last five laps so I had to hold on. I have to thank Jay for racing me clean, and boy does it feel good to win this."
The victor of the Fabolous Foo Foo Race was Ryan Farrell.
The 'AAA' Bracket 50-lap Championship Feature got off to a wild start, as Herb Moag found his way to the front in the early stages. Craig Miller started in second and as the early action intensified, Miller ended up in the turn one wall, inducing a lap three caution as his day came to a premature close.
A multi-car accident brought out another caution two laps later and on the restart, Vaughn Lesko nabbed the top spot as door-to-door racing was prevalent throughout the field. Kevin Gress soon picked off Lesko, driving by him on the outside to take the lead. A caution followed soon after when Alan Bekielewski got turned around on the frontstretch.
On the restart, Gary Kasperek jumped ahead of Gress, as Lesko battled back into the picture taking away second. Lesko began taking peeks on the inside of Kasperek, working his way towards the lead as the race hit the halfway mark. Lesko edged Kasperek at the line as the caution flew for Bobbie Jean Wall's broken down machine with 22 laps remaining.
Jeff Burrows and Scott Gardner continued their march to the front on the ensuing restart, pushing past Lesko as Kasperek nursed a slim lead. Burrows grabbed the inside as Kasperek battled back high. The two dueled side-by-side over the final fifteen laps as Gardner eagerly awaited an opportunity to make his move.
The white flag waved on the top three and Kasperek grabbed the top spot when Burrows got loose in turn one, enabling the driver to push his way to the front. Gardner and Burrows made contact on the backstretch battling for second as Burrows held on to the bridesmaid's spot.
Kasperek found his way back to victory lane at the Bahama Bracket Nationals and after a little deliberation, decided to take the money home. "I couldn't see anything out there," an exasperated Kasperek said after his win. "It was tough to see the clock or get everything under control. It was definitely touch-feely and I touchy-feelied the wall a couple times. It's nice to find my way back to the winner's circle here though."
Rockford Speedway American Short Tracker regular Victor Young earned his spot in next year's Bahama Bracket Nationals, winning the Fabolous Foo Foo Race.
Eric Schoffen led the 'AAAA' Bracket to the green, breaking out on the fourth marker of the 50-lap headliner. Five laps in, Schoffen's efforts to exit to the pits went awry, as Charlie Frisch and Isaac LaCour Jr. got together, sending all three careening into the wall and mangling up their machines.
Jeff Jeras took over the top spot on the ensuing restart, but Brad Warthan quickly manuevered around him for the lead, bringing Dana "Zippity" Czach Jr. with him into second. Czach and Warthan duked it out over the next ten laps until Warthan broke out with 32 laps remaining handing Czach a solid lead over Rockford Speedway RoadRunner champion Bobby Frisch.
Frisch quickly ate into Czach's margin, going side-by-side with "Zippity" Czach for the lead as they reached the halfway point. The battle for the lead continued over the next fifteen laps before Bobby Frisch finally edged out Czach for the top spot. Czach wouldn't give up though, quickly battling back on the inside of Frisch.
Don Lunsford, running third, broke out before getting together with Czach, ending both drivers' chances at the win as Frisch wrapped up his great season with a win in the Bahama Bracket Nationals, taking home the crown. "Bullet" Bob decided to cash in on his win, collecting the money and eschewing a trip to the Bahamas.
"It was nice to end the year like that," a tired Frisch admitted in victory lane. "I have to give Dana a lot of respect for racing me clean, and I race him clean. We did that all year long and I know we'll do that every time we race. The car was fast, to come from the back like that and get to the front, we were definitely fast."
The 12-lap Fabolous Foo Foo Race was won by Larry 'Dubs' Anderson.
Brandon Johnson led the Hornets Bee Bracket 50-lap feature to the line, notching the lead in the early stages before breaking out on lap six. Nick Lasher inherited a comfortable lead as Nate Chandler looked for second behind him.
The red flag came out after Jim Kunis blew up on the backstretch, leaving an oil streak behind him. On the restart, Chandler grabbed second before setting his sights on Lasher, battling side-by-side with the leader for 12 laps before finishing the move exiting turn four just past the halfway point.
Bryce Bailey and fast qualifier Brad Chandler continued to rise, as the Iowa contingent took over the top three spots after Lasher fell off the pace. The lead soon became a three-way battle with just under ten laps remaining as the "Flying Iowans" fought for the win. With just six laps remaining though, Nathan Chandler broke out while leading, ending his chance to win and handing the lead to Bryce Bailey.
Jim Hanson made his presence known as the race came to a close, battling with Brad Chandler for second before claiming the bridesmaid's position on the final lap.
Bryce Bailey held on for the win, collecting the crown as the 18th annual Bahama Bracket Nationals wrapped up. Bailey, after much deliberation with his parents, decided to take the trip for two to the Bahamas, making him the fifth person to accept the trip in 18 years.
"Man this feels good to win," an ecstatic Bailey stated in victory lane. "I race with them (the Chandlers) all the time at Hawkeye Downs and I know they've been here before and I haven't. I just wanted to get around this track and figure it out and the car was fast."
Josh Sandberg won the Fabolous Foo Foo Race for the Hornets.
The best appearing car and longest traveling team award went to the same driver, Hornets driver Brandon Johnson, who made his way from Texas to race this weekend.
Racing returns to the Rockford Speedway next weekend for the final time in 2009, as the 29th annual Goblin 250 Enduro and Demo Derby take to the high banks on Sunday, October 25th.
