Nason and Sparkman Each Take Their Second Championships at the Rockford Speedway

By: Kevin Ramsell
Monday, September 03, 2007 (Loves Park, IL) – Both Fred Nason and BJ Sparkman repeated a feat that each accomplished in 2005. Both would each collect their second championship, and at the same time take home a feature win. Vinny Mangiaracina, Alex Areleno, Vern Fagerberg, Bobby Yonke, Jeff Myers and Camden Murphy also took home feature wins on Yellowbook Monday Funday at the Rockford Speedway.

The battle for the NASCAR All-American Sportsman Championship came down to the feature event between Nason and Doug Bennett. Prior to the start of the feature event, Nason held a four point lead over Bennett.

The two kept a close check on each other as Ron Morris was the early leader in the 25-lap event with Bennett and Nason right behind him.

The battle for the championship would appear to come to an end as Bennett began to develop engine problems with 10 laps completed. A lap later Nason would get by Bennett for second.

Bennett’s luck would get worse as he and Jon Reynolds Jr. made contact in turn four. Bennett would spin while Reynolds made contact with the outside wall. Race Officials declared that Reynolds was at fault and gave Bennett his spot back.

Nason and Bennett would start side-by-side behind Morris on the re-start. The two would battle side-by-side until Bennett’s engine problems got worse and he began to fall back. On lap 17, Bennett would call it a day as he took his Modified to the pits.

With three laps to go, Nason was challenging Morris for the lead when Morris got loose in turns one and two allowing Nason to get by and take the top spot.

Nason would go on to his fifth feature win of the year and also his second championship in three years.

Morris would hold on to second with Brock Behnke in third. Butch Swinbank and Jake Cholke rounded out the top five.

Sparkman seals up the Budweiser American Short Tracker division championship by picking up the feature win.

The battle for the championship came down between Sparkman and Tim Melvin where Sparkman had a 21-point lead over Melvin.

The battle for the championship sadly came to an end on lap 8 of the feature event as Melvin broke a timing belt and had to pull off the track. As Melvin was slowing coming off of turn two, this allowed Sparkman, who started eighth, to catch up to early leader Larry Dickinson II and challenge for the top spot.

Sparkman made his move to the top spot on lap 10. He would go and pull away from Dickinson to a huge lead. As he laps counted down for Sparkman, he would develop engine problems, but they were not as severe as he was able to hold off his brother George Sparkman for the win.

Sparkman’s win was very emotional for him, “I lost a best friend in my dad and Snooks (Evink) a good friend of mine, it was hard but these guys (pointing to his pit crew) stuck by me, they are the greatest.”

Dickinson would finish third with Reed Nuttall in fourth. Steve Allman finished fifth.

Mangiaracina collects another feature win in the Crap Scrapper Hornet feature win.

It was a wild start to the 15-lap feature as David Russell would rollover his Hornet going down the backstretch. The car would slide on its roof going into turn three. Russell would get out of his car and wave to the crowd. The car was placed back on its four tires and Russell was able to drive it into the pits.

On the re-start, Alan Bekielewski took the early lead but that lead only last for three laps as Mangiaracina would fly by him coming down the front stretch.

Mangiaracina would coast the rest of the way to an easy win with Bekielewski holding off Steve McBride for second. Mark Vicencio would finish fourth with Nick Lasher rounding out the top five.

Areleno holds off Brown for the INEX Legend win.

Areleno didn’t have an easy drive in the 20-lap feature win. Areleno took over the top spot from David Townsend on lap 5 as he got by him on the inside coming off of turn four.

Blake Brown followed Areleno and kept the pressure on Areleno for the remaining 15 laps. On the last lap, Brown went high coming off turn four to dive to the inside to try to steal the win, but at the line it was Areleno by a car length.

Maxx MacNamara was third with Brandon Allen in fourth. Hermann Greinig finished fifth.

Allen’s fourth place finish sealed the INEX Legend track championship.

Fagerberg collects the INEX Bandolero feature win.

Brody Beyer and Jesse Bernhagen put on a great side-by-side battle throughout the eight lap feature event. The two exchanged the lead lap after lap.

On the last lap, the two made contact in turns one and two causing Bernhagen to make hard contact with the wall. Beyer also got loose and hit the wall as well. This handed the lead over to Fagerberg who went on to take the checkered flag with Brandon Heisler in second.

It was a happy win for Fagerberg as he and his father raced at the Kentucky Speedway the night before and drove overnight to come and race at the Speedway today.

Bernhagen’s day didn’t end on a bad note, as he did take home the INEX Bandolero track championship.

Yonke goes wire-to-wire in the Allison Legacy feature.

The young racer jumped out to a ten car length lead over John Beinlich in the 10-lap feature event. The only competition was for second as Beinlich battled with Dwight Dunlap for the spot.

At the line, it was Yonke with the win while Beinlich held off Dunlap for second. Brian Baldyga was fourth while Bill Fox rounded out the top five.

Murphy was the benefactor of Cody Lipstreuer’s bad luck of the SuperCup Junior division.

Lipstreuer had the early lead in the 12-lap feature event. He appeared to be on his way to an easy victory when, with two laps to go, Lipstreuer fell off the pace allowing Murphy to easily pass him on the outside and cruise to the win.

Garett Goodwin finished second with Morgan Schissel in third. Toby Stewart and Kyle Brinkmann rounded out the top five.

Myers makes a late race pass to win the SuperCup feature.

Myers along with Erik Gehrke and Erle Hoth battled for the top spot throughout the 20-lap feature event. Hoth would lead throughout the early part of the feature while Gehrke and Myers tried to find a way past Hoth.

With two laps to go, Myers made his move on the inside of Hoth for the lead. The two ran side-by-side down the backstretch with Myers getting past Hoth for the top spot coming out of turn four.

Jake Jump made a great last lap run as he went from fourth to second on the last lap getting past Gehrke and Hoth. At the line, it was Myers with the win with Jump barely getting second over Hoth. Gehrke finished fourth with Mason Mitchell in fifth.

This Saturday night it’s the Budweiser Night of Thrills presented by LaMonica Beverages.
