LOVES PARK, Ill. (Saturday, July 17th, 2010) – No matter the length of the race or who is challenging him up front, Jon Reynolds Jr. is simply on fire in the month of July. Winning his third consecutive race in convincing fashion after passing Mike Lloyd with ten laps remaining, ‘Driver X’ once again sent a resounding message that he’s a contender for the championship in the Stanley Steemer NASCAR Late Models at the Rockford Speedway. Slicing into Tim Sargent’s points lead, Reynolds Jr’s third win in a row also marked the third win of a different duration, this time getting the job done in 30 laps. Scott Hoeft took home the Budweiser American Short Trackers’ main event while Matt Lundberg fended off a pair of veterans for a victory in the Bargain Hunter Sportsman. Ed Ensor and Jacob Van Wazer also tallied feature wins on the evening.
Mike Lloyd landed the lead as the green flag waved on the 30-lap headliner for the Stanley Steemer NASCAR Late Models. An early caution flew as contact between points leader Tim Sargent and Kyle Shear sent Shear spinning into the frontstretch infield with three laps completed.
Both drivers went to the back of the pack for their roles in the incident and on the ensuing restart, Lloyd jumped back out to a nice cushion as Mikie Breiner forced his way up to second. Jon Reynolds Jr. looked to carry over the momentum from his two consecutive feature wins as he exploded by Breiner for second with ten laps in the books.
As Reynolds Jr. set his sights on the top spot and Lloyd, two-time defending champion Jerry Gille gunned it past ‘Fast’ Eddie May for fourth as Sargent rallied back into the top five, finagling his way up to fifth.
Up front, Reynolds Jr. wasn’t done, heeding the ten lap signal and making his move on the bottom groove to forcefully take the lead away from Lloyd. ‘Driver X’ pulled away from a helpless Lloyd to collect his third consecutive feature victory, each coming at a different duration.
“My old man said you need to be plain fast to win,” a pleased Reynolds Jr. stated in the winner’s circle. “We just gotta keep doing this and we’ll catch him (Sargent) for the points lead. I gotta thank my crew and everyone who sponsors this car. We got it in shape over the last week and made it happen tonight. Lloyd was fast especially once I got to him but we had a good car.”
Lloyd continued a solid season with a second place showing as Mikie Breiner returned to the top five with a third. Two-time defending champion Jerry Gille managed another top five in fourth while Tim Sargent rallied to finish fifth.
In the Bargain Hunter Sportsman 25-lap main event, Matt Lundberg mashed the gas to snatch the early lead and pace the 12 car field around the high banks. Justin Sellers settled into second as defending champion Doug Bennett negotiated his way around the ‘Quiet Riot’, Don Exline, for third.
Bennett’s machine lost grip as he threw his car into turns three and four, costing him a little time as he targeted Sellers and second as the halfway mark passed. Behind the leaders, points leader Matt Berger worked his way up to fourth pushing past Ron Morris with ten laps remaining.
As Berger quickly closed behind them, Bennett finally made his move, successfully using the bottom groove to blow by Sellers exiting turn four as Berger pursued. Berger, fast qualifier on the evening, managed to gain traction and grab third before setting his sights towards second and Bennett.
While a hungry Berger looked for an opening on the low side, Lundberg hit his marks beating the veterans to the checkered flag and snagging his second feature win of the 2010 campaign.
Berger’s best efforts weren’t enough as he was forced to settle for third behind Bennett’s stellar second place finish. Sellers held onto fourth nosing out Austin Nason at the line.
Scott Hoeft surged to the early lead in the 25-lap Budweiser American Short Trackers showcase event. Zach Rodriguez settled into second and inched his way towards Hoeft’s back bumper in the turns, gaining momentum as he exited the corners.
Behind the leaders, top dog Nick Cina Jr. pressured BJ Sparkman for third. The points leader managed to close up to Sparkman’s back bumper but couldn’t get any closer. Up front, Hoeft kept Rodriguez at bay.
Rodriguez’s last gasp effort fell short, never really challenging Hoeft as the Wisconsin driver went wire-to-wire for his second victory of the 2010 season.
BJ Sparkman notched a solid third place effort while Nick Cina Jr. recovered from a blown engine two weeks ago to collect fourth. Young Kyle Lapier rounded out the top five in fifth.
Steve Naples found his way to the front in the early stages of the 20-lap CSR Super Cup Pro feature. Ed Ensor wasted no time blasting past the field, working his way up to second with five laps in the books before completing a pass on the inside to take away the lead from Naples.
As Ensor settled into the lead quickly building breathing room, Jim Termanas was working hard for positions battling on the bottom of the quarter-mile as he negotiated from fifth to second within a two lap span in the late portion of the race.
With three circuits remaining, Tony Velez took away third from Naples who then succumbed to Nathan Kelly for fourth.
Up front, Ensor cruised, walking away from the field to claim victory and take home a trophy as a present courtesy of Santa and his rocket of a race car.
Termanas took home a stellar second while Velez valiantly collected third. Kelly found fourth as Naples finished off the top five in fifth.
Erica Ensor shot into the top spot when the green flag waved on the Super Cup Juniors 15-lap headliner before immediately succumbing to Elliot Pritchard’s hot rod.
Tyler Brown quickly followed suit maneuvering up to second and eyeing the lead as Pritchard fell into the young hotshoe’s clutches. Brown made his move with five laps in the books grabbing the lead right before a wreck in turn one brought out the caution.
On the restart, Jacob Van Wazer swallowed up Brown and inherited the lead with nine laps to go, fending off Ensor’s last lap jostling to collect the victory and take home the trophy.
Ensor settled for second as Brown came home third. Kodee Busekros found his way up to fourth while Pritchard rounded out the top five in fifth.
In the Sam’s Drive-In RoadRunner Challenge Christmas Tree Race, drivers had to trip the timing clock at the start/finish line and hurriedly run to Santa and the Christmas tree to grab their present. Swiftly turning around and rushing into the crowd, the drivers sought the help of a young fan in the crowd to open the gift before sprinting back into their waiting cars and completing a lap around the quarter-mile. After an exciting early rush, Adam Cartwright edged out Robert Roush for the victory despite falling out of his driver’s seat trying to get into his car, showing everyone that perseverance is indeed a virtue.
Racing returns to the high banks this Wednesday night as the 41st annual Loves Park Police vs. Businessmen Grudge Race takes center stage. Next Saturday, the ASA Late Model Series makes their return to the high banks of the Rockford Speedway for their ‘All-Star 100’ lap headliner. The NASCAR Whelen All-American Series will also be in action as the Stanley Steemer NASCAR Late Models, Mtn Dew RoadRunners and Super Cups will all be in action, plus the first ever Pizza Pie Race for the Sam’s Drive-In RoadRunner Challenge.
