LOVES PARK, Ill. (Wednesday, June 29th, 2011) -- Kris Nilson may have gotten a late start to his 2011 season but the Mtn Dew RoadRunner hotshoe is sure making up for lost time. The veteran put together a strong showing going wire-to-wire to grab the initial 25-lap Mtn Dew RoadRunner Super Summer Series headliner just four days after driving to victory lane in Saturday night's main event.
Jason Dull kicked off his summer the right way, riding around and crossing the finish line third before inheriting the win after the top two finishers were disqualified in the Bandits' Wild Wednesday debut. In the inaugural Misfits main event, Tim Roach slipped past the slowed machine of Jason Dull to steal the trophy in exciting fashion.
Other Wild Wednesday action saw Mary McBride fend off a bunch of newcomers in the Winged Women on Wheels 2011 debut while Dennis Smith Jr. managed to keep his machine on the right path en route to a season-opening National Figure 8 League feature victory. Deanna Chandler won the INEX Bandoleros main event to start off her season on a high note.
Fresh off a feature win last Saturday night, Kris Nilson nabbed the top spot in the beginning stages of the 25-lap Mtn Dew RoadRunner Super Summer Series main event.
Curt Nighswonger made contact with Terrance Robinson on the backstretch before Jarrod Sutherland spun into the infield to avoid the mayhem, bringing out an early caution on lap three. Robinson suffered a flat left rear tire from the incident and had to exit to the pits.
A wild restart saw Nilson escape before ‘Mean’ Gene Marocco and ‘Bullet’ Bobby Frisch got hooked and both drivers slammed into the backstretch wall before somehow gathering it back up by the time turn three came around, resuming action relatively unscathed. Frisch moved into second after the jousting concluded while fast qualifier Anthony Lloyd took advantage of Marocco’s slowed hot rod to grab third.
Marocco wasn’t done though, swiftly pulling even with Lloyd as the battle for second became a three-car fray with Frisch towing his competitors around the speed plant on the high line while Nilson slowly fell into his clutches.
Lloyd surrendered third to Marocco with eight circuits to go as Frisch continued to try and chase down the leader. With the white flag in the air, Frisch gave it one last go but couldn’t pull off the come-from-behind win as Nilson scored his second win in a row via a smoking fast race car.
"I gotta thank my guys that work on the car," a pleased Nilson admitted afterwards. "Most wins come from the guys in the shop and starting off Wednesday night right. Feels pretty good. It definitely wasn't a gimme."
Frisch garnered a second place finish in his second event of the season while Gene Marocco managed a solid third place effort. Anthony Lloyd landed in fourth and Adam Cartwright completed the top five in fifth.
A fast and furious start marked the 20-lap Bandits 2011 Wild Wednesday debut as Jacob Aldrich ascended to the early advantage. Vinny Mangiaracina wasn’t long in waiting however; the fast qualifier moved into the lead on the second lap as the bunched up field went four-wide down the frontstretch.
Devon Dixon drove up into the runner-up spot with five laps in the books and turned his attention toward the leader, slicing his deficit to Mangiaracina by five car lengths as the halfway mark came and went.
As Mangiaracina successfully navigated lapped traffic, he began to ease away from his rival pulling out to a five car length edge right before a caution flew with five laps to go after Deric Bloomingdale’s motor went south in turn two.
After a lengthy cleanup period, racing resumed with Mangiaracina slipping away to a three car length edge while Dixon and Jason 'Double-Duty' Dull dueled for the runner-up spot. Dixon eventually emerged with the spot but the jousting for the second position cost him an opportunity to battle for first.
Dixon made a commendable effort but came up a few feet short as Mangiaracina wound up crossing the finish line first. It would prove to be a moot point however as Mangiaracina and Dixon were both eventually DQ'd. Jason Dull garnered the victory with a strong run.
Trevor Robinson moved up to second while young Jacob Aldrich rallied to end up third. Robin Ulrey and Bryan Ellis came home fourth and fifth respectively to complete the top five.
Fast qualifier Jason Dull didn’t lag behind on the Misfits 20-lap main event, flying to the lead when the green flag waved.
The new class, featuring everything ranging from Legends to Allison Legacy Cars and anything in between, spread out pretty quickly on the high-banked oval as Dull began to navigate lapped traffic on the sixth circuit.
Canadian Tim Roach gave chase in second as his FIRA picked off third-place Cory Cootware and quickly set sail for the leader. Dull and Roach were truly the class of the field, lapping the entire lineup as Roach slowly closed in on Dull, slicing the gap to a car length. With two laps remaining, Roach overtook Dull’s wounded machine to grab the lead and hit his marks the finals eight turns en route to the first ever Misfits victory.
Dull’s winged sprint car limped home in the bridesmaid’s position as Cory Cootware ended up in a podium spot with his third place effort. Dwight Dunlap and Kyle Voss rounded out the top five in fourth and fifth respectively.
Sue Deery snagged the top spot in the early stages of the 12-lap Winged Women on Wheels feature. Mary McBride quickly stole the lead on the second lap as Deery dropped a few car lengths behind on the backstretch.
Rookie Tabitha Bennett burst through the field and moved from fourth into the runner-up spot, passing Deery on the low side, with five circuits remaining. Just a lap after her move through the field, Bennett fell off the pace as Deery inherited the second position and Chandale Swartout eyed a podium spot.
McBride went unchallenged over the final six laps cruising to the first win of the year in the division.
Sue Deery rode to a second place finish in her first ever race while Tabitha Bennett locked up a podium spot in her debut. Chandale Swartout came home fourth.
Robert Stoltz paced the field to the green in the 10-lap National Figure 8 League main event but it wasn’t long before Tom Schneider was nipping at his heels for second. The two made contact in the midde of the ‘X’ and Schneider got turned around as Lloyd Hawkins and Dennis Smith Jr. filed their shoes up front.
The two went door-to-door over the course of the next five laps as Adam Cartwright perused the action in third. Hawkins made a critical mistake with two laps to go, nailing an infield tire and dropping to third as Dennis Smith Jr. inherited the top spot.
‘DJ’ never looked back from that point, making his car wide enough to hold on for the exhilarating win as cars came close to colliding numerous times in the middle of the ‘X’.
Adam Cartwright slid across the line in second as Hawkins held on for third. Figure 8 ringer Tom Schneider rallied to finish fourth while Robert Stoltz came home in fifth to complete the top five.
Deanna Chandler jumped out front in the 10-lap INEX Bandolero feature before Emily ‘Bug’ Melichar closed up in second with five to go.
Melichar squeezed Chandler up the track in turn four with three to go before the two young guns went door-to-door over the final three laps. Both girls traded the top spot a few more times before young Deanna Chandler took the lead for the final time and held on for the trophy.
Melichar crossed the stripe in second.
The first Bandit Challenge event of the year featured the Forwards/Backwards Race as drivers took to the high banks for four laps the normal way before slamming on the brakes, throwing it in reverse and driving backwards the final two laps.
Bryan Ellis led the way over the first four laps before stalling when he had to go backwards and Chris Jones quickly went from fourth to first in the transitionary phase, never looking forwards until he crossed the finish line to grab the win. Jacob Aldrich came home in second.
