Point Battles Tighten following Reynolds, Jr Rockford Win

Loves Park, IL- Driver X, Jon Reynolds, Jr parlayed a second place qualifying effort into three wins Saturday night at Rockford Speedway during Klaas Financial Night, Round III of the Gilley’s Cool 5 Series. Following an impressive Stateline Staffing Services Dash victory, the third place points man captured the heat race win with a white flag pass of point leader Ryan Carlson and would then cruise to his second NASCAR Stanley Steemer feature victory in the 30 lap main event after an early battle with Tom Gille and Mitch Garfield for the lead position. Matt Lundberg returned ‘The Family Truckster’ to victory lane just one week after a spectacular backstretch incident in Bargain Hunter Sportsman action, while BJ Sparkman methodically worked his Budweiser American Short Tracker to the front and to the checkers for the fifth time this season. Howie Ware would be awarded the Mtn Dew RoadRunner feature win as 71 year old Gene Maracco remains undefeated in Sam’s Drive-In RoadRunner Drags. Jacob VanWazer was victorious in the American Super Cups, Justin Pearson topped the ten car Skid Car event.

John Beinlich and Rookie point leader Mitch Garfield led the NASCAR Late Model field to green with Garfield getting the jump on the outside taking command of the early lead. An early race caution would see Beinlich’s machine facing the wrong way in turn one collecting Ryan Carlson, Steve Rubeck, Joel Clossey and Matt Berger, only Carlson and Beinlich were able to continue. The double file restart would see Garfield out front with Tom Gille and Reynolds, Jr in formation behind. Driver X dismissed Gille and quickly shot to the inside of Garfield to secure the top spot. Meanwhile, an intense battle was brewing for fourth position as Gilley’s Round II winner James Swan, Ryan Carlson and Jerry Gille engaged in two nearly three wide racing for the majority of the race, a battle that would include Garfield for the closing three circuits. When the checkered flag waved it was Reynolds, Jr first across the stripe, Tom Gille secured second, Garfield recorded his second consecutive third place finish and was followed by James Swan and Ryan Carlson. Jerry Gille was the fast qualifier, electrical issues forced him to climb into Brandon Eash’s machine, which Gille wheeled to a sixth place effort.

A host of problems for the top two point men in Bargain Hunter Sportsman played out well for third place Matt Lundberg as he jumped to the early lead in the 25 lap affair and never looked back. Rearend issues sidelined defending champion Matt Berger in the early stages and point leader Austin Nason would fall victim to mechanical woes near the halfway point. A shower of sparks lit up the night as the axle broke on top five running Justin Sellers, collecting ‘Batman’ Rich Hinerichsen in process. Lundberg would power ahead of former champion Doug Bennett, Bennett would settle for second followed by Brad Gerke. Tim Jendrycki and Josh Lundy both recorded career best finishes, fourth and fifth respectively.

Nick Letsinger, Alan Bekielewski and Steve Drays locked horns in a three way battle for the lead during the opening stages of the Budweiser American Short Tracker feature. Letsinger would eventually relinquish the top spot to Drays after Drays made the inside line work to his advantage. Drays would quickly have his hands full as BJ Sparkman and defending champion Kyle Lapier pounced on the leader. BJ Sparkman was able to secure the lead just before a fire under the hood of Artt Higbee’s mustang brought out the caution flag as the big flames were quickly extinguished by the Safety Team who pulled Higbee to safety. The battle up front intensified on the restart as now Sparkman and Lapier had Scott Hoeft, Nick Cina and George Sparkman to contend with. As the laps wound down, it would be BJ Sparkman’s race, Hoeft bested a hard charging George Sparkman for second with Lapier and Cina rounding out the top five after fantastic racing throughout the field.

A three car breakaway would be the best way to describe the Mtn Dew RoadRunner 20 lap feature. Terry Ciano, Howie Ware and Alex Papini got the lead early and battled with one another for the hardware. It appeared that Ciano would earn his second win of the season, however his car failed post race inspection. That made the final three laps of the Ware vs. Papini battle that much more important. The two favorites for the title would go wheel to wheel for what all in attendance thought was second place, Ware would best a sideways Papini at the line, which turned out to be the winning move for Ware. Third through fifth would go to Bobby Frisch, Dana Czach and Kris Nilson.

Jacob VanWazer survived early cautions in the American Super Cup feature to record the victory, besting Erle Hoth. Gene Marocco won the best two out of three RoadRunner Drags over Terry Ciano. Skid Cars made their first appearance of 2011, the front wheel driven racers have metal plates attached to their rear wheels creating sparks, action and fun. Bandit competitor Justin Pearson spun and sparked his way to victory.
