Robinson Rolls to Checkers as Lloyd Locks Up the Title on Wild Wednesday Championship Night at Rockford

By Jordan Kuehne

LOVES PARK, Ill. (Wednesday, August 10th, 2011) -- Anthony Lloyd had waited a long time for this; so had Terrance Robinson. On the final Wild Wednesday of the year at the legendary Rockford Speedway, Robinson rolled to a comfortable victory, his first in three years, while Lloyd landed the statuesque trophy awarded to the Mtn Dew RoadRunners Super Summer Series titlist with a sixth place finish.

Wild Wednesday Championship Night saw Kyle Voss grab the Allison Legacy crown while 13-year-old Cory Cootware snagged the Legends hardware. In the Bandits, Jason Dull registered a dominant championship effort as Steve McBride rounded out a solid night for his family with the checkers. Earlier in the evening, McBride's wife, Mary, took down the Winged Women on Wheels title while Olivia Chance prevailed in the main event.

Deanna Chandler swept the night away with a feature victory and the crown for the INEX Bandoleros while Tim Roach locked up the open-wheeled title in the Misfits division. Dennis Smith Jr. notched a third place effort to put away the National Figure 8 League hardware as Dave Lumsdun Jr. landed in the winner's circle. Chris Jones survived the wackiness of the Bandit Challenge to land the win and the summer-long crown.

When the 25-lap Mtn Dew RoadRunner Super Summer Series main event got underway, Jonathon Stoltz surged to the lead as points leader Anthony Lloyd started the event in 12th.

‘Bullet’ Bobby Frisch needed to manage a top five finish and see Lloyd land at least nine spots behind him in order to overcome his 11 point deficit and steal the crown.

Terrance Robinson rolled to the top spot after a daring maneuver made it three-wide down the backstretch on the third circuit. Stoltz brought out a caution just one lap later when he lost a wheel on the exit of turn two and slowly inched to a stop on the off ramp to the pits.

When racing resumed, Robinson smoothly soared to a five car length edge while Adam Cartwright and Brett McCoy dueled for the second spot. Frisch made it a three-car fray for the bridesmaid’s position and registered third with 17 laps remaining.

With McCoy in his sights, Frisch continued his quest for the title as Lloyd sat three spots behind him in sixth.
As the top two drivers drove away from the rest of the field, Frisch and Lloyd remained three positions apart with the circuits quickly winding down on the scoreboard. With six laps to go, fast qualifier Jarrod Sutherland tracked down Frisch and began working him over for a podium spot.

The final few left turns of the summer for the division went by without a hitch and former Saturday night champion Terrance Robinson cruised to an easy win to snap a three year winless streak.

“It’s been a long time coming for this one,” Robinson admitted. “To come out here and finally win one of these features after three years feels amazing. It wasn’t easy for sure and when you win one, you gotta take it.”

Anthony Lloyd paced himself en route to a sixth place result and the Mtn Dew RoadRunner Super Summer Series title as Frisch fell nine points short with his third place run.

“My guys work hard all day, everyday,” Lloyd lamented in the winner’s circle. “They do a great job so I can’t complain. It’s awesome to win one of these and Bobby’s a great driver and he’s fast every week. This is a tough crowd so to beat these guys, I definitely did something special.”

McCoy’s only foray out on Wild Wednesday netted him a runner-up finish while Sutherland continued his strong late season surge with a fourth place effort. Adam Cartwright rounded out the top five in fifth.

Points leader Jason Dull snagged the early edge in the 20-lap Bandits headliner as last week’s feature winner, Tim Dickson, drove through the field into second on the opening circuit.

The top three cars went bumper-to-bumper as fast qualifier Steve McBride muscled to the bottom of Dickson and challenged for the runner-up spot.

As McBride slowly worked over Dickson for second, Dull attempted to escape but couldn’t quite get away. Steve McBride nabbed the lead with nine laps remaining and finally cleared Dull on the backstretch as Dickson tried to follow his path to the bridesmaid’s position.

McBride slipped away out front as Dull clinched the championship when his main adversary, Trevor Robinson, fell off the pace with issues under the hood of his machine.

With the white flag in the air, Steve McBride picked through heavy lapped traffic and was slowed by Jacob Aldrich in turns three and four allowing Dull and Dickson to piece together a mad dash charge for the checkers. McBride barely held on for the win by half a car length while Dull eked out a runner-up effort by a nose over Dickson before cars went spinning into the turn one wall in a wild finish.

“Just a little bit of pressure,” the coy McBride quipped after his wife Mary garnered a title earlier in the evening. “For a fat guy here, this is a lot of turning and running. It was a lot of fun and we put a show on for the fans tonight.”

Jason Dull collected the first ever Bandits title by 40 markers over Robinson.

“I’ve been working on something for 14 years,” Dull admitted after doing a victory jig on the roof of his hot rod. “The motor’s 100% stock and we bought a brand new tire and put it all together. I was stuck in traffic and I don’t know what happened on the final lap but I haven’t looked at the car yet. There’s so much time that goes into these cars and I have to thank everyone that helped me out.”

Dull came home second while Tim Dickson notched a third place effort. Alan Bekielewski and Robby Robinson rounded out the top five in fourth and fifth respectively.

The final 20-lap Misfits headliner of the season saw open-wheeled hotshoe Jason Dull race out to the early edge as three championships were up for grabs.

By starting the feature, young teenager Cory Cootware clinched the Legends title by a comfortable margin. An early caution paused the proceedings and fast qualifier ‘Downtown’ Vernon Brown dropped out of the event on the restart.

Dull jumped to a solid lead out front while open-wheeled points leader Tim Roach and Cootware gave chase in second and third respectively.

With heavy lapped traffic in his rearview mirror, Dull zoomed past the halfway mark and extended his advantage to over a straightaway while Kyle Voss and Cootware continued to lead their respective classes.

Without the aid of a caution, Roach couldn’t muster a challenge for the lead as Jason Dull drove into victory lane.

“This is what’s called a Rascal Outlaw,” Dull offered. “We run them all together here and at a couple of other tracks. I have to thank all the guys in the pits and my dad as well as everyone else that helped.”

The open-wheeled title was a solid consolation prize for Janesville wheelman Tim Roach.

“This is the track to race at,” Roach offered. “I love racing at Rockford and this was a good season of clean racing at this track with Jason Dull.”

Kyle Voss survived a topsy-turvy season for the Allison Legacy crown in just his second year of competition on the high banks.

“I can’t believe we did it,” an emotional Voss admitted. “I watched the 20 car (of Dwight Dunlap) and watched it happen and said we’re gonna get that done. My mom was onboard with this and helped out so much. It’s so amazing that this happened to us.”

13-year-old Cory Cootware made his long haul from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan pay off with a championship.

“It’s around 320 miles from the UP,” Cootware stated about his extended travel itinerary. “I’m glad that Rockford went and created this mixed division so we had a place to run this season.”

A wild and wacky beginning to the final 10-lap National Figure 8 League main event saw an unfortunate Shawn Rickelman head home on the hook while Curt Nighswonger swung around and made a three-wide pass for the top spot on the second circuit.

It wasn’t long before Dave Lumsdun Jr. jumped into the lead a lap later as points leader Dennis Smith Jr. followed Figure 8 ringer Josh Thiering into the top five. As Lumsdun Jr. extended his lead, Thiering worked around past champion Tom Schneider for third and started pressuring Lloyd Hawkins with two laps to go.

With the white flag waving, Thiering moved to the high side of Hawkins and made the move for second work as Lumsdun Jr. landed the win by a solid margin.

“We’ve been trying all year for one of these,” Lumsdun Jr. “Thanks to my crew and all my sponsors we got it on tonight. We’re coming back for National Short Track Championships too!”

Dennis Smith Jr. charged through the field and registered a fourth place finish to collect the 2011 National Figure 8 League title by 16 points over Adam Cartwright.

“I watched my dad race for as long as I can remember,” Smith Jr. acknowledged. “I’ve been doing this for the last six or seven years and it’s just awesome to get a title in the Figure 8’s. Now we’ve got a Figure 8 championship to go with those two RoadRunner titles back-to-back.”

Thiering settled for a runner-up effort while Hawkins held on by a nose over Smith Jr. for third. Tom Schneider completed the top five with a strong fifth.

Olivia Chance corralled the early lead in the 12-lap Winged Women on Wheels main event as Mary McBride locked up the 2011 championship with her feature start.

McBride moved past Tabatha Bennett for third with the race halfway home as a brazen Sue Deery dove below Chance and used a lapped car as a pick to snag the top spot.

Olivia took a chance on the low side and raced past Deery for the lead with four laps remaining as McBride closed up behind and challenged for the bridesmaid’s position. Deery washed up the speedway and relinquished the second spot to the champion.

Nobody could track down Olivia Chance out front as she grabbed her second win of the year.

“It’s been quite the effort these last few weeks,” Chance quipped afterwards. “It’s pretty cool to overcome the bad luck we’ve had and grab wins the last couple of weeks.”

McBride was thankful afterwards for her opportunity to run for a championship after finishing second in the feature.

“First and foremost, thanks to everyone who supported me,” a tearful McBride stated. “I have the best friends in the world and I have to say thanks to my husband for letting me do this. He knew I loved it.”

Tabatha Bennett finished third as Sue Deery dropped to fourth. Jocelyn Davenport finished off the top five in fifth.

Deanna Chandler chased down Emily ‘Bug’ Melichar and grabbed the early lead in the INEX Bandoleros 8-lap championship feature. By starting the main event, the 12-year-old Chandler clinched the title over Melichar but both drivers still wanted a final trophy for their hardware collection.

Chandler slowly inched away from Melichar over the final laps and held on for her fifth win of the season, taking home a pair of trophies in the process and defending her 2010 INEX Bandoleros title.

“I learned that you gotta get on the gas,” Chandler reflected in the winner’s circle. “I have to thank all my fans, my family, and all my sponsors.”

Melichar notched a runner-up finish and fell 12 points shy of Chandler in the standings.

The final Bandits Challenge of the season featured the six-lap Flagpole Race and young Jacob Aldrich grabbed the top spot in the early stages before the field swung a hard left around the flagpole. When the first loop was completed, Chris Jones had inherited the lead and he kept it that way over the remainder of the race en route to the win and the summer-long Bandits Challenge championship.

“These (Challenge) races are a blast,” Jones admitted afterwards. “You never know what you’re gonna do week in or week out and this is a ton of fun. I gotta thank the fans and everything for what they do each week.”

Jacob Aldrich collected a second place finish.
