LOVES PARK, IL (Sunday, October 2, 2011) – Steve Carlson put his name in the record books by tying the late great Joe Shear with his eighth National Short Track Championship. Carlson held off Jacob Goede and Nick Panitzke to win the ASA Midwest Tour Budweiser 200 event.
Carlson started on the outside of the fourth row and followed Goede for the first half of the race. After the halfway break on lap 95, Carlson worked on the inside of Goede on lap 97 to get by him for the top spot. Carlson would lead the final 103 laps to take the win.
Current ASAMT point leader Andrew Morrissey was fourth and 1990 NSTC Champion Rich Bickle Jr. was fifth.
Lyle Nowak has visited victory lane at Rockford Speedway many times but he never did it during the National Short Track Championships, until today. The seasoned veteran took home the Mid-American Series Mountain Dew 75. Dan Church was second. Nowak took over the lead from Scott Null on lap 37 and drove off to his first NSTC win.
Jon Reynolds Jr. took home the Gerber Collision Ultimate Challenge in which he collected a $1,000 bonus. Reynolds pulled into victory lane with a flat right front tire after he and Tim Sargent put on a great battle where the two swapped the lead back and forth about five times from laps 10-14. With five laps to go, Sargent would get loose off of turn four which allowed Reynolds to get away with the win. Tom Gille was the third driver in the event, but pulled off on lap five when it appeared to have his right front tire running against his body.
The 47th Annual National Short Track National Championships will take place on September 28-30, 2012 at Rockford Speedway. Make your plans now to be a part of “One Great Racing Weekend!”
