Former RoadRunner Champion Terrance Robinson claimed his first checkered flag of 2012 when he bested Gene Marocco and Adam Cartwright in a fight to the finish during the RoadRunner Super Summer Series twenty five lap feature at Rockford Speedway. Chris Jones was victorious in Bandit action, former Winged Women on Wheels Champ Wanda Dobbs went to win the division’s main event as Cartwright rebounded to pick up the feature win following a wild Figure 8 event. Vernon Brown and Cory Cootware took the trophies back across state lines after they both found Misfit success. Aaron Meyers from Christ the Rock and Chris Thomas from Grace Lutheran were victorious in the annual Fastor Pastor events which saw thirteen area pastors get behind the wheel of a Bandit racecar.
Charlie Frisch led the field of twenty-one RoadRunners to green with Dave Lumsden, Jr flanked to his inside. A mishap on the opening lap out of turn two continued down the backstretch for Frisch causing his mount to collide with ‘the point’, a tire located at the pit exit in turn number three. When the event was restarted minus the damaged Frisch racer, it was Lumsden jumping to the early advantage. A who’s who of RoadRunner drivers filled his mirror including past Champions Terrance Robinson, Gene Marocco and Robert Roush. Five laps in, Robinson used a slick move to the inside to wrestle the lead from Lumsden bringing Marocco with him. The ‘Flyin’ Hawaiian’ Jerrod Sutherland followed suit and moved into the third spot one lap later. Sutherland challenged for the top spot but fell out of contention with five laps to go opening up the door for Marocco and Cartwright to engage in a fierce battle with Robinson for the lead. The runner up spot switched amongst Marocco and Cartwright who utilized the low line but the lead was never relinquished as Robinson held on for the checkered flag. Marocco finished mere inches ahead of Cartwright who was followed by Roush and Brian Mayer.
It appeared that young second generation driver Jacob Aldrich would secure his name in the Rockford Speedway history books as he took command of the seventeen car, 20 lap Bandit feature during the majority of the event. With the likes of last week’s winner Tim Dickson, point leader Terry Ciano and Trevor Robinson waiting in the wings, there were no slouches in the mix. Robinson quickly had his hands full as Ciano and Dickson looked for a way into the second running position. Meanwhile, Chris Jones who has been fast all season long, worked his way through the field and caught the lead pack. Jones dove to Robinson’s inside door as second through fifth positions fought tooth and nail. Contact was made between the two on multiple occasions when Jones’ machine disagreed with the bottom groove on the high banked oval. Jones would eventually clear Robinson and set sail to catch Aldrich up front. As the white flag signaled one lap remaining, Jones caught Aldrich, nosing ahead as the tandem entered turn three and closing the deal as they crossed the finish line. Aldrich recorded a career best second, Ciano, Dickson and Robinson completing the top five.
For the first time in her career, Wanda Dobbs visited Winged Women on Wheels victory lane behind the wheel of a four cylinder racecar. The former Champ grabbed the top spot early in the going and never looked back. Tracy Wallin peeked to the inside of Dobbs on multiple occasions as the laps wound down but could never keep her momentum to propel her into the lead. Dobbs and Wallin were closely followed by a hard charging Stacy Roach, Chandale Swartwout and Destiny Robinson.
The Misfits are without a doubt the fastest division to be found on a Wild Wednesday night. Teenage competitor Cory Cootware had his hands full in the early going as his Legend car was challenged often by the Allison Legacy Stock Car of Dwight Dunlap who had the FIRA Mini-Indys of Tim Roach and Vernon Brown on his tail. Roach would be the first to find a way around Cootware and into the top spot, which he would relinquish just laps later to eventual Open Wheeled Misfit winner Brown. Cootware was able to hold off Dunlap to collect his second Fendered Misfit win of the season.
For the first time, Adam Cartwright drove his own car in Wild and Wacky Figure 8 action and boy did it pay off. Vanilla Ice as he is known to his legion of fans shot past Robert Stoltz just two laps into the ten lap run, he was quickly tailed by last week’s victor Derrick Dobbs. Dobbs appeared to be catching Cartwright but it was not to be two in a row for Dobbs as he retired his ride with just two laps remaining. Josh Thiering and defending Figure 8 Champion Dennis Smith, Jr locked bumpers as they came to the white flag sending both rides into the turn one wall momentarily. Both cars continued but the night belonged to Cartwright. The top five was completed by Thiering, Smith, Jr, Jim Daugherty and Lloyd Hawkins.
Racing action continues this Saturday Night June 30 with the running of the Stanley Steemer Star Spangled 76, a seventy-six lap feature for the NASCAR Late Models. Saturday night also marks Round II of the Gilley’s Cool 5 Series with the Bargain Hunter Sportsman, Miller Lite American Short Trackers, RockStar Energy RoadRunners and the Sam’s Drive-In Flagpole Race. The night will be capped off by the 10,000 WATT Fireworks Extravaganza. Rockford Speedway will also host a full night of racing on Wednesday July 4 featuring the RoadRunner Super Summer Series in the Midnight Ride of Paul Revere and the 10,000 WATT Fireworks Extravaganza.
