Bilderback’s Star Shines Brightest at Rockford All-Star 100

By Kraig McCay
The Miller Lite All-Star 100 lived up to its billing Saturday night at Rockford Speedway as Michael Bilderback scored the biggest win of his career in dominating fashion after starting eleventh on the grid. Rookie Johnny Robinson claimed Bargain Hunter Sportsman honors, Ken Jones was victorious in American Super Cup competition and Arlyn Roush recorded RockStar Energy RoadRunners career win number one.

Wayne Freimund led the opening lap of the Miller Lite All-Star 100 but was quickly overtaken by inside front row starter Keith Tolf who brought Tim Lampman with him into second place. Those two leaders stretched their lead out as Freimund, former track Champion Tim Sargent and Johnny Baumeister fought for the third spot. The charge was on midpack as Steve Rubeck, ‘Driver X’ Jon Reynolds, Jr, Rich Bickle, Brian Johnson, Jr and Michael Bilderback maneuvered their way toward the leaders. The outlook of the race changed multiple times, the first coming on lap twenty-two when Lampman shot to the inside of Tolf heading into turn three, making contact with the leader and sending both cars for a ride. Rubeck inherited the lead followed by Reynolds, Bilderback, Bickle and Freimund.

Reynolds was the next to mount a charge on the leader, as the field completed the thirtieth circuit, Rubeck and Reynolds collided as they crossed the stripe and when the smoke settled Rubeck’s ride was sitting facing the wrong way on the backstretch as both drivers battled to keep the handle on their rides. This put Bilderback, the night’s fastest qualifier at the point with Bickle and Johnson, Jr in pursuit. After a lap forty caution for a fender brace at the start finish line, Johnson attempted to crowd Bickle high heading into turn one, Bickle shot beneath Johnson with Johnson finding Bickle’s bumper not to his liking, causing Johnson to spin wildly down the backstretch grass.

Bickle rebounded quickly, charging back into the top five before a flat right front ended the night for the 1989 All-Star 100 victor. This left Bilderback, Reynolds, Rubeck and Johnson as the main contenders left on the track, in front of Kelsey Bauer who ran fifth. Johnson pressured Reynolds heavily for the runner-up spot as Bilderback stretched his lead to a straightaway advantage with ten to go. Multiple attempts failed for Johnson who then fell within reach of Rubeck who shot into third with five laps to go. Bilderback crossed the stripe first, scoring his first career Super Late Model triumph at the sixty five year old speedplant. The young racer had previously won the Rockford Spring Classic in 2008 while competing in the Big 8 Late Model Series. Reynolds held off Rubeck, Johnson settled for fourth and Bauer became the first female to record a top five finish in the mid-summer classic.

Johnny Robinson never looked back on his voyage to win number two in the Bargain Hunter Sportsman during his rookie campaign. The fiercest battle on the track would involve Brett McCoy and a pair of former Champions in the form of Doug Bennett and Austin Nason. Bennett pulled even with McCoy at the halfway mark and eventually closed the deal with ten laps remaining in the contest. Nason followed suit in his return effort to the division as he normally competes for the weekly Late Model rookie title. Nason went on to catch Bennett and eventually worked past the point leader but nobody could catch Robinson on this night. McCoy held on to fourth and Justin Sellers outdueled his opponents to record a top five result.

Curtis Nighswonger gave it all he had in the RockStar Energy RoadRunner twenty lap affair. Hands down the best race of the evening saw three and four wide racing throughout the field, with perhaps the best three wide move coming when Kyle McQuality and Arlyn Roush pulled even with Nighswonger. Roush took his ride down to the dirt out of turn four and completed the three wide pass to capture the lead. Roush who earlier in the night recorded a win in the 2nd Over the Line Wins Race took the checkered flag first after starting eighteenth on the field in order to record career win number one. Howie Ware mounted a great charge through the pack to take runner-up honors and was followed by Dennis Smith, Jr, Bobby Frisch and Derek Nichol.

Lap after lap Kodee Busekros looked for a line that would work to get around veteran American Super Cup competitor Ken Jones but was unable to find a line that worked after searching high and low. Jones stayed cool and calm to record the win by less than a car length over Busekros, Cody Erdmann, Derrick VanDreel and Brian Baldyga.

Racing action resumes the Wednesday night during Rockford Industrial Welding Supply Night featuring the RoadRunner Super Summer Series, Bandits, Winged Women on Wheels, Spectacular Drags, Figure 8’s and Misfits.
