The 48th Annual National Short Track Championships at Rockford Speedway are just six weeks away and already entries are filtering in for the weekend’s main event, the 200 lap Super Late Model feature race, which through the years has featured some of the top drivers in all of short track auto racing. Among this year’s early entrants are two former winners of this prestigious event.
Ringle, Wisconsin’s Jeremy Lepak has thrown his hat into the ring for the 48th running of the National Short Track Championships (NSTC). The ‘high banks’ of Rockford Speedway have been good to Lepak through the years, as he is one of six drivers to win multiple NSTC crowns. Back in 2006, Lepak had a weekend to remember, setting fast time among 30 entrants and then moving from his 11th starting spot to the lead on lap 137 en route to his first NSTC triumph, holding off Indiana hot shoe Scott Hantz and veteran Larry Schuler for the win. In 2007, it was Lepak again making a charge through the pack, capturing the lead in a frantic final 100 laps, holding off local favorites Jerry Gille and Dan Lensing for his second straight crown.
Vadnais, a native of White Bear Lake, Minnesota, returns to Rockford for the first time since 2009, looking to become only the seventh driver to win multiple National Short Track Championships. In September of 2008, Vadnais made the trek to northern Illinois, looking add his name to the impressive list of NSTC winners. Vadnais had to outrun some of the very best to get to victory lane that day, including three-time NSTC winner Eddie Hoffman and seven-time Rockford Speedway track champion Bobby Wilberg. The win made Vadnais only the second Minnesota driver to win the 200 lapper, joining New Prague’s Mike Miller, who wore ‘the wreath’ in the fall of 1973.
The 48th Annual National Short Track Championships will take place Friday September 27th through Sunday September 29th at the famed Rockford Speedway in Loves Park, IL. 14 divisions will be competing over the three days featuring Super Late Models, the Big 8 Late Model Series, Great Northern Sportsman Series, Mid-American Stock Car Series and much more.
