It's been a season to remember for Super Late Model driver Steve Apel.
The 25 year old from Sussex Wisconsin pocketed four feature wins this summer at Slinger (WI) Speedway en route to his first ever Super Late Model track championship. The championship at Slinger was especially rewarding for Apel, given the fact he had been so close so many times before including a heartbreaking runner up finish in 2012.
Now Apel looks to add one more feather to his cap in this season, declaring himself as an entrant for the 48th Annual National Short Track Championships at Rockford Speedway. Last September, Apel finished fifth in the 200 lap main event, his best ever result at Rockford. Last year's finish, coupled with this year's success, has Apel confident heading into "One Great Racing Weekend."
"I believe we have a car than can win there," Apel said. "We just need to get ourselves in the position to do so. It's a long race yet you gotta be in the right places at the right times."
Aside from his three previous Super Late Model attempts at Rockford, Apel has made multiple starts at the famed quarter mile with the Big 8 Late Model Series. The challenge and allure of Rockford keeps bringing the young Wisconsinite back for more.
"Rockford is such a challenging track," said Apel, "and after the year we've had...a win at Rockford in the 200 would really top this season off. A win at Short Track would be huge!"
The 48th Annual National Short Track Championships will take place Friday September 27th through Sunday September 29th at Rockford Speedway in Loves Park, IL. 14 divisions will be competing over the three days featuring Super Late Models, the Big 8 Late Model Series, Great Northern Sportsman Series, Mid-American Stock Car Series and much more.
Apel and the rest of the Super Late Models will qualify and run qualifying races on Saturday, September 28th with the 200-lap National Short Track Championship taking place on Sunday afternoon September 29th
