On Whelen's Night of Champions at Rockford Speedway Saturday night, the racing fans of the Forest City were treated to some of the best hard-nosed, door-to-door racing of the 2008 season on the historic quarter mile oval. It was a proper way to bring the curtain down on one of the most competitive seasons in the Speedway 's 61 year history, where each division would see anywhere from seven to ten different winners!

The numbers are against Ricky Bilderback.

With only a week left in the regular season at Rockford Speedway, the seven-time and defending track champion in the Stanley Steemer NASCAR Late Models is 73 points out of the points lead and all but locked out in his drive for his 8th straight championship. But that doesn't mean Bilderback still can't show the rest of the field how it's done from time to time. The Rockton driver blasted from his fifth starting spot to the lead in only 2 laps to take his division-leading fourth feature win on Saturday night at Rockford Speedway.

Seventeen year-old Steve Erickson Jr. has been proving all year long he has the talent to compete in the veteran-laden Budweiser American Short Tracker division at the Rockford Speedway. For a rookie to step into a division immediately and compete with names like Sparkman, Melvin, McCoy and the like, one can already be impressed. But to also win against those names in your first year, now that is an accomplishment.

Rockford, IL- For the first time ever, Illinois Vintage Racing will compete on the 61 year old Rockford Speedway, Saturday night August 16. The historical value of the cars competing with this group in unmatched.

Perhaps the most interesting car to Rockford area fans will be the 1964 Chevelle being driven by former Sante Fe Speedway Champion Bill Knippenberg. This car was originally ran by the late Joe Shear, the six time Rockford Speedway toured the countryside claiming numerous checkered flags while behind the wheel of this machine.

Rockford, IL- Charlie Frisch, Laura Siarkiewicz and Chris Gantz were crowned as Rockford Speedway Champions during the final Wild Wednesday event Wednesday evening. Chargin’ Charlie backed up his 2007 Coca-Cola RoadRunner triumph with the RoadRunner Super Summer Series title as he won the feature event over last year’s titlist Gene Marocco. In a hard fought Winged Women on Wheels Championship, it came down to whomever won the final event and that is what Laura Siarkiewicz accomplished to finish just three markers ahead of Robin Ulrey in the final standings. Meanwhile, Chris Gantz recorded the Figure 8 Championship after finishing fourth to Jonathan Stoltz who is on leave from military duty in the final Figure 8 feature of the season.

After a less than stellar beginning to the 2008 Stanley Steemer NASCAR Late Model season, driver Tim Sargent seems to be putting it together as the season moves to a close. With blown engines and wrinkled sheet metal in his past, the look of victory lane is a far more comforting look for the South Beloit driver than the look of a repair shop.
