MILLER LEADS LIST OF WINNERS AT THE 58th NATIONAL SHORT TRACK CHAMPIONSHIPS

Loves Park, Ill., October 1—Jeremy Miller etched his name into the

record books during Rockford Speedway’s Last Lap Season as he captured

the National Short Track Championships late model stock car special at

the historic speedway Sunday afternoon.

The 58th running of the race saw the 43-year-old Miller, a Rockford

resident, win the 158-lap Big 8 Late Model Series contest at the

banked, quarter-mile, paved oval – becoming the 33rd different and

final winner of the annual Midwest classic dubbed over the years as

“One Great Racing Weekend.

Miller, a five-time Big 8 titlist but winless at Rockford since 2007,

wheeled his Kar Korner/Colony Brands/Montgomery Ward/Stewart

Automotive/Loves Park Motorsports-sponsored, Joe Hunter-owned Ford No.

5 to the victory, holding a 1.970-second margin at the finish over

second place-runner Randy Sargent. 2013 Rockford champ Alex Papini,

Jesse Bernhagen, two-time track champion Jake Gille and five-time

champ, including this year’s title, Jon Reynolds Jr. rounded out the

“top six” in the 25-car field.

After honorary starter “Jumpin’ Jack” Heiman waved the green flag,

Shane Radtke, coming from his front row pole starting spot, led the

first 24 laps with Gille moving into the lead briefly with Dale

Nottestad taking over on lap 26. Winner of the last two NSTC

contests, Austin Nason, this event’s fastest qualifier, dropped out

during the warmup laps and didn’t complete one green flag lap.

Nottestad, looking for his first NSTC victory, looked in control and

built a comfortable margin, with the likes of Gille, Sargent, Miller,

Papini and Michael Bilderback giving chase. With 80 laps complete, a

mandatory pit stop took place on the main straightaway with crews

refueling and making chassis adjustments for the final half of the

race.

Miller hustled by Gille for second place after the restart with

Nottestad still running strong. Miller began to peck away at

Nottestad’s lead with 30 laps to go. Suddenly with 29 laps remaining,

Nottestad’s Chevy began to backfire and pop with the leader coming to

a halt in turn one. Nottestad was pushed to the pits with Miller

inheriting the lead, a lead he would not relinquish.

“I was catching him (Nottestad),” said Miller. “I was running maybe a

tenth (of a second) better than him. If I was going to get him, we

were going to have to play a little rough. I was going to have to do

a little “Rockford Racing.” I don’t know if I could have got him. He

got off the corners good.

“This is huge – my biggest win. The team put so much into this, a lot

of testing. Even this morning, we were making changes. We made maybe

90 percent the right change and then at the break we went the other 10

per cent and last half of the race the car was really good.”

One more race remains for the Big 8 Late Model Series in the 2023

campaign, with a stop at La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway on tap as part

of the annual Oktoberfest Race Weekend this Saturday night October

7th. Heading into La Crosse, Jon Reynolds Jr holds a 38 point

advantage over Randy Sargent for the Championship while Greg Borchardt

has already locked up the 2023 Big 8 Late Model Series Rookie of the

Year award.

FRIDAY NIGHT

Rockford Speedway Short Tracker Track Champion Nick Schneider capped

off his season in style, taking home the victory in the headlining

race of Opening Night of the 58th NSTC. Schneider was followed across

the line by former Track Champion Kyle Lapier and Tyler Deschaine.

Shawn Bowar had an unforgettable season in the Bandit division at

Rockford Speedway and ended his terrific campaign with an conquest at

NSTC. Bowar outran Ryan Finley and Stephan Hillary for the checkers.

Rockford Speedway Roadrunner Champion Kevin Memoli added to his

accolades at NSTC, winning the divisions’ feature race. Memoli outran

a familiar foe in Austin Fowler en route to the win with Robert Roush

coming home in third.

DeForest Wisconsin’s Steven Mueller won the NSTC Sixermania feature

with Daemyn Lounsbury and Kayden Ellis taking second and third

respectively.

Monroe Wisconsin’s Tyler Leutenegger won his first NSTC trophy by

topping the Super Stox field. Jerry Legner ended the race in second

place, while Gus Morzel claimed third.

SATURDAY NIGHT

Austin Nason was the victor in the 147 lap Jody Deery Super Late Model

showdown. The win was the second of the night for Nason, who also

topped the competition in the 50 lap Hugh Deery Classic for the

Sportsmen division.

Tyler Deschaine followed up a third place finish in Friday night’s

Short Tracker feature by being the dominant car in Saturday night’s

Midwest Dash Series race. Deschaine came out on top ahead of David

Russell and Aaron Rude to earn the victory.

SUNDAY AFTERNOON

Josh Nelms set fast time and later won the 50 lap feature for the Mid

Am Racing Series. Nelms took the lead just before the race’s halfway

point and beat Timmy Stewart to the line for the win. Daniel Calhoun

claimed his first Mid Am top three finish in crossing the line behind

Nelms and Stewart.

Austin Fowler was the top dog in the 33 lap Roadrunner Rumble. Fowler,

the 2022 Track Champion, collected $750 for his victory. Waylon

Robinson finished second place in the Rumble, followed by Dusty Heil.

Overall, 250 racecars raced in twelve divisions over the course of the

three day event.

THE NATIONAL SHORT TRACK CHAMPIONSHIPS…BY THE NUMBERS

There have been fifty-seven National Short Track Championships contested prior to 2023.

The first race was won by a 25-year-old from Wisconsin. That kid used that win to eventually push him to legendary heights. When it was all said and done, Dick Trickle was a three-time NSTC winner (1966, 1978, 1979) and one of America’s all-time short track heroes.

But you can’t mention the phrase ‘short track heroes” and not talk about either Joe Shear or Steve Carlson. Both won their share of big races from coast-to-coast. Both also are a large part of the history of the National Short Track Championships.

Shear, the local legend, won his first NSTC in 1972 and ‘wore the wreath’ seven more times over the course of the next 25 years. Shear’s final NSTC win was one of the most memorable, winning at the age of 54 years and 4 months (the oldest winner of the race) while also battling cancer, a battle he would ultimately lose just a few months later. Ironically Shear passed Carlson to win his last NSTC in 1997.

Carlson was king of the National Short Track Championships during the 1990’s, winning back-to-back years in 1992 & 1993 and then doubling up again in 1995 & 1996. After Shear’s 1997 triumph, Carlson won THREE straight between 1998 and 2000 and is the only driver ever to win three in a row. 14 years after Shear won his last NSTC, Carlson tied Shear with his eighth victory in 2011, outlasting Minnesota’s Jacob Goede for the win. In another case of irony, Carlson was also 54 years old when he won his eighth NSTC.

Thirty-two drivers have won the National Short Track Championship, with ten drivers winning the race more than once. This means that ten drivers have won 61% of the NSTC’s through the years. Shear and Carlson alone won 28% of the NSTC’s that have been contested.

Drivers from 24 states have competed in the National Short Track Championships. Those states include: Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Minnesota, Missouri, Kansas, Tennessee, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Arkansas, Oklahoma, California, Washington, Nevada, Texas, Colorado, Rhode Island. The Canadian province of Ontario has also been represented multiple times.

Eight of those states have been represented in Victory Lane. Wisconsin has been represented the most (31 wins), while Illinois has been represented 17 times in victory lane on Sunday afternoon. Notably, Joe Shear won races for both states, winning as an Illinois citizen in 1972, 1974 & 1975…and as a Wisconsin resident in 1982, 1983, 1985, 1987 & 1997. Two Minnesota drivers (Mike Miller and Josh Vadnais) and Two Michigan drivers (Tim Fedewa and Butch Miller) have won the NSTC. Tennessee (Mike Alexander), Arkansas (Mark Martin), Colorado (Wayne Stallsworth) and Iowa (Ramo Stott) have all made it to victory lane while Junior Hanley won one NSTC for Canada back in 1981.

Racing has always been about the numbers. The National Short Track Championships have plenty of history and plenty of numbers to go along with it.

ONE GREAT RACING WEEKEND. ONE MORE TIME.

The National Short Track Championships. A vision from the mind of Hugh Deery. Deery was an innovator. A mover and a shaker. He knew the power of language. He knew what it took to put on a show.

Pit the local favorites against the out-of-town hot shoes. That was the name of the game.

In the early years, the race largely featured the Chicagoland stars versus the best Wisconsin had to offer. Throw in some talented racers from Minnesota and a smattering stars from Iowa…and the recipe for short track success was cooking.

As the years wore on, the event truly became a national affair. Drivers from coast-to-coast entered the event, with twenty-four states represented on the entry list through the years. Canada was also represented more than once, with names like Hanley, Biederman and Slack trying their hand at Rockford’s famed “High Banks.”

The National Short Track Championship is a race that has jump-started careers. Most notably, Mark Martin won the race in 1977 as a scrawny 18-year old kid. All of these years later, the NASCAR Hall of Famer still claims Rockford’s National Short Track Championship as the race that propelled him to new heights and put him on the road to success.

The National Short Track Championships have also been a race ripe for the occasional upset. Maybe one of the biggest surprises came in 1970, when Denver Colorado’s Wayne Stallsworth came to town and walked away with the big trophy. Stallsworth led the final 59 laps on his way to victory in front of a crowd of nearly 4,000 people.

Another surprise came in 1989, when a 22 year old from Michigan named Tim Fedewa won the National Short Track Championship. Fedewa outran Washington’s Garrett Evans for the win. The win eventually translated into success for Fedewa, who was a long-time regular in what is now known as the NASCAR Xfinity Series, where he won four times.

As much as surprises have dotted the landscape of the National Short Track Championships, there are also those drivers who became masters of the Rockford “rollercoaster.” Joe Shear is the name many think of first, especially those around Rockford. Shear, the six time Track Champion, was an eight-time NSTC winner. Only one other driver has won eight NSTC’s and his name is Steve Carlson. Both drivers won their last NSTC at age 54, fourteen years apart (1997 and 2011). Chicagoland great Eddie Hoffman hustled his way to four NSTC wins (2001, 2004, 2005, 2013) while Dick Trickle won the first NSTC in 1966 and also bagged back-to-back wins in both 1978 and 1979. Ten drivers have won more than one NSTC all-time.

The list of winners is long and distinguished. Ramo Stott, Dave Watson, Junior Hanley, Jim Sauter, Al Schill Butch Miller, Scott Hansen and Rich Bickle…just to name a few. The list of drivers who have tried and failed to capture the pot of gold at the end of the NSTC rainbow is just as distinguished.

The National Short Track Championship has always been a challenging race. A test of men and machine, patience, and precision. A skillful drive can end in a heartbeat. Luck can turn at the drop of a hat.

It’s that kind of stuff that makes legends and breaks hearts. And it’s what keeps us coming back for more.

So here we are again. One Great Racing Weekend. One More Time.

As the seventy-sixth and Last Lap Season of Rockford Speedway hits its midway point, the tradition of racing on Independence Day Weekend returns!

This weekend, fans can look forward to double the excitement with two racing and entertainment programs planned for the historic quarter mile racetrack.

The fun begins on Saturday night July 1 with a smorgasbord of on-track excitement. Six divisions will go racing Saturday with the headliner being the Midnight Ride of Paul Revere, the race run in total darkness! The Midnight Ride features the Windsor Pizza Parlor Roadrunners contesting their usual 20 lap feature, but with a twist…the lights are off! The racecars each are allowed one light on top…but otherwise it’s a mad scramble in the dark unlike any other!

Fireworks wrap up the night on Saturday night, an evening that also includes the Fitzgerald Equipment Sportsmen, Kickstart Bandits, Illini Midgets, High School Racers and Powder Puffs.

Monday night July 3 showcases the Stanley Steemer NASCAR Late Models in their longest race of the regular season, the Star Spangled 76 lap race. This years Late Model field has been the most competitive in recent memory, which means Monday nights main event could be an unforgettable one!

The RNR Tire Express Short Trackers join the fun Monday night along with the Janes Cafe Sixers. The traditional Roadrunner Challenge Flagpole Race is on the card too, as is One-on-One Spectacular Drags and of course the huge Fireworks Extravaganza at the end of the night.

Gates open at 5 PM with racing at 7:07 PM both nights.

FRANTIC FINISH FAVORS NOTTESTAD AT ROCKFORD’S SPRING CLASSIC

It was going to be a good opening day for reigning Big 8 Late Model Series champion Dale Nottestad. And then suddenly, the day went from good to great.

After forging through the field early in the 88 lap Spring Classic at Rockford Speedway, Nottestad found himself near the front of the field as the race neared the mandatory halfway break at lap 44. Nottestad challenged race leader Jeremy Miller multiple times before the halfway yellow flew, settled for second at the break with the plan of making a move for the lead soon after the race’s resumption.

But when the race restarted, Miller was able to jump away from everyone else, leaving Nottestad in a furious fight for second. Once Nottestad got second to himself, Miller had checked out. Over the course of the next 39 laps, the race went caution free allowing Miller to jump out to a straightaway advantage, leaving Nottestad with little chance at catching Miller and painting a picture of simply a solid second place result.

But the entire complexion of the race changed on lap 83, when Jerry Mueller’s car went into a spin and caught fire, bringing out the yellow flag with just five laps to go. The stoppage set up a trophy dash for the win and Nottestad took full advantage. Capitalizing on Miller drifting into turn one, Nottestad made his move to the inside for the lead. It took two laps before Nottestad was able to nose into first place on the 85 ^th lap.

Just as Nottestad thought he was free and clear, Miller and Max Kahler collected in turn one and two, sending Kahler around and bringing out the yellow flag with just two laps to go. On the ensuing Green-White-Checkered finish, Nottestad was taxed with holding off a pair of former Spring Classic winners in Jon Reynolds Jr and Alex Papini. On the restart, Reynolds put the pressure on Nottestad but could not make a move. When the checkered flag flew, it was Nottestad ahead of Reynolds by a car length, while Papini held third ahead of Minnesota’s Grant Brown. Two-time Spring Classic winner Mike Beyer rounded out the top five.

The win was Nottestad’s tenth career Big 8 Series triumph, and his fourth Big 8 Series win at Rockford. In securing the win, Nottestad also secured his third Spring Classic conquest, making him one of just five drivers to win the event three times or more.

Reynolds had a solid opening day, starting off with posting fast time in Qualifying with a blistering lap of 13.490. To go along with that, Reynolds was also the Powersource ‘Power Mover of the Race,’ advancing from his fourteenth starting spot to a second-place finish and earning a $100 bonus.

The next race for the Big 8 Late Model Series is set for Friday night May 19 at Madison International Speedway in Oregon, WI.

Other action on Sunday included the 44 lap Mid Am Racing Series feature and the 25 lap ‘Bandit Blast’ for 4 cylinder cars. Josh Nelms of Lockport, Ill., was the winner of the Mid-Am Racing Series main event, which saw a field of 21 take the green flag. The 45-year-old Nelms scored his first career Mid-Am victory, driving his McMahon Transport Group-sponsored Chevrolet to the checkered flag over Clay Curts who led the race for most of the way. The series’ fastest qualifier, Nelms held a 5.566-second victory margin at the end. Dale Lectus Jr., Andrew Meyerhofer, Vince Cooper and Steve Blair rounded out the top six.

Nick Schmidt, from Watertown, Wis., scored the victory in the 25-lap ‘Bandit Blast.’ Schmidt finished ahead of Bart Brockman and Zakary Chanda.

This Saturday afternoon, racing continues at Rockford Speedway with the WXRX 250 enduro for 4 cylinder cars. Race Time is 1 PM on April 29.

Saturday night weekly racing action begins on May 6 ^th with the 76 ^th NASCAR Season Opener. Race time on May 6 is 7:07 PM.

SPRING CLASSIC POSTPONED TO SUNDAY!

With temperatures hovering just above freezing and with the continual

development & threat of snow showers into the afternoon and early

evening on Saturday, Rockford Speedway officials have made the choice

to postpone the 46th Annual Spring Classic until tomorrow afternoon

(Sunday April 23).

Racing is set to begin at 1 PM, with a full program including the Big

8 Late Model Series, Mid Am Racing Series and the Bandit Blast. Pit

Gates open Sunday at 8:30 AM, with Rotating Practice set to start at

10 AM. Qualifying for all three divisions starts at 11:30 AM. Opening

Ceremonies begin on-track at 12:50 PM, with the green flag set to wave

at 1 PM.

SPRING CLASSIC ENTRY LIST FEATURES A CHAMPIONSHIP PEDIGREE

When the Big 8 Late Model Series kicks off the upper Midwest asphalt racing season this Saturday night at Rockford Speedway, it will do so with a talented and distinguished group of stock car pilots.

“The Best Weekly Warriors in the Country” boasts a list of at least twenty-two entrants for this Saturday night’s 88 lap season opener at the famed Rockford Speedway, including drivers who have collected more than their share of big checks and beautiful trophies over the course of their racing careers.

All told, five former Spring Classic winners are among the entrants while 34 track and series championships are represented among those who are going for the gold on Rockford’s high banks. Four past Big 8 Series champions who together boast nine series’ championships are set to race at Rockford with 54 Big 8 Series feature wins represented between them.

Reigning Big 8 Series champion Dale Nottestad is right at the top of the list of challengers. Nottestad, the only seven-time Late Model track champion in the history of Wisconsin’s Jefferson Speedway, is also a two-time Spring Classic winner. A conquest Saturday for Nottestad would put the Cambridge Wisconsin resident in elite company, as one of just five drivers to win Spring Classic at least three times.

Last year’s Spring Classic winner Max Kahler is back to defend his crown this weekend. If Kahler can go back-to-back, he would become just the sixth driver in the 46-year history of the event to win the race in consecutive seasons. Kahler has been among the best in Big 8-style Late Model racing recently at Rockford, racking up four total wins last year at the Speedway, located not too far from his hometown of Caledonia.

When speaking of drivers who have mastered Rockford Speedway in recent years, one must think of Austin Nason. The Roscoe native has captured the last two National Short Track Championships at Rockford. A win Saturday night would make Nason one of just five drivers to win all three of the major Late Model races at Rockford (The National Short Track Championship, All Star 100 and Spring Classic).

Recent Rockford Speedway track champions Jake Gille and Jon Reynolds Jr are also locked in and ready for Saturday night’s Big 8 Late Model Series opener. Gille, a two-time Rockford Speedway champion, is in pursuit of his first Spring Classic win. Reynolds, who is a four-time Rockford Speedway track champion, would like to become the eleventh multi-time Spring Classic winner. Reynolds won his only Spring Classic back in 2012.

A familiar name returns to Rockford Speedway this weekend in the form of Alex Papini. The 2013 Rockford Speedway champion, Papini is gunning for his second Spring Classic win, with his only other victory in the event coming during his dominant 2013 season. Papini brings a trusty steed to the fight, racing the familiar yellow and black 02 car out of the shop of seven-time Rockford Speedway champion Ricky Bilderback.

Five-time Big 8 Late Model Series champion Jeremy Miller is back at Rockford, looking to add to his all-time Series win total. Winning has become natural for Miller in the Big 8 Series, but winning at Rockford Speedway has eluded Miller for years. The last time the Rockton native won a Big 8 Late Model Series race at Rockford Speedway was September of 2007. A win Saturday night would be Miller’s seventeenth win in the Series, more than any other driver all-time.

The first time the Big 8 Late Model Series was part of Spring Classic was in April of 2005. On that Sunday afternoon, Machesney Park’s Mike Beyer was the big winner. Beyer backed that up with another Spring Classic victory in 2006 and became one of the few drivers to ever win the race in consecutive years. Can the seasoned veteran pull off a third win Saturday night?

And what about Kody King? The soon-to-be 16-year-old from Clear Lake Iowa was last year’s Late Model track champion at Hawkeye Downs in Cedar Rapids Iowa. A win at Spring Classic would make King one of the youngest Late Model winners in the history of Rockford Speedway.

Meanwhile, Minnesota’s Grant Brown comes to Rockford with a new car and a focus on the Big 8 championship. Can Brown become just the second driver from the state of Minnesota to win a Spring Classic?

Machesney Park’s Josh Thiering won last year’s Star Spangled 76 at Rockford and was one among the leading feature winners during the weekly grind. Perhaps Thiering could be one of the dark horses in the 88-lap go-round.

Other challengers include last year’s Big 8 Series Hard Charger and Points runner up Jerry Mueller, 2021 Big 8 Rookie of the Year Randy Sargent, South Beloit’s Jayden Dahlberg (a fourth-place finisher in last year’s National Short Track Championship) and Fall River Wisconsin’s Hanna Raley (9 ^th place in last year’s Big 8 points and the only female driver entered in this weekends event).

The 46 ^th Annual Spring Classic at Rockford Speedway presented by Kunes.com is this Saturday night April 22. Grandstands open at 3 PM, with qualifying set for 3:30 PM. Racing gets underway at 5 PM. Joining the Big 8 Late Models on the card is the Mid Am Racing Series and the four-cylinder Bandit Blast.

Officials at Rockford Speedway are excited to announce the Key Dates for the upcoming 2023 racing season, the 76 ^th consecutive season of operations for the historic facility located in northern Illinois.

The first big event of the new racing season is scheduled for Saturday night April 22, as the Big 8 Late Model Series kicks their season off with the 46 ^th running of the “Spring Classic,” which is highlighted by an 88-lap feature for the “Best Weekly Warriors in the Country” and is supported by the Mid Am Racing Series and the Bandit Blast. For the second straight year, Spring Classic runs ‘under the lights,’ with race time scheduled for 5 PM.

Saturday night Weekly Racing returns to Rockford Speedway beginning on May 6 with the “76 ^th NASCAR Season Opener.” The Saturday night slate will see a multitude of divisions competing throughout the summer, including the NASCAR Late Models, Sportsmen, Short Trackers, Roadrunners, Bandits, Sixers and the new Super Stox class along with visits from other traveling groups and Series. The weekly points chases conclude on Saturday September 9 with “Night of Champions.”

The “Original Trailer Race of Destruction” returns on Saturday night June 10, while the “World Famous Figure 8 Trailer Race” is back and on the schedule for Saturday night August 5. The jam-packed thrill show spectacular known as “Night of Thrills” helps ring in the Fall season on Saturday September 16.

Independence Day Weekend is always a busy time at Rockford Speedway and this year is no exception. Saturday night July 1 brings “The Worlds Fastest Short Track Show” to town in the form of the Must See Racing Sprint Cars. Monday night July 3 is headlined by the NASCAR Late Models and their ‘Star Spangled 76’ along with the Roadrunner ‘Midnight Ride of Paul Revere’ race in total darkness and the 10,000 watt Fireworks Extravaganza.

The 58th Annual National Short Track Championships take center stage Friday, Saturday and Sunday September 29, 30 and October 1. The three-day mega show includes 10+ divisions competing over three days and for the third straight year is headlined by the Big 8 Late Model Series and their 188 lap National Short Track Championship on Sunday afternoon.

The 32 ^nd Annual Bahama Bracket Nationals is scheduled for Friday, Saturday and Sunday October 13, 14 and 15. The unique event pits over 200 4, 6 and 8 cylinder cars against each other and against the clock in “Bracket style” races and truly provides some of the best racing of the entire season.

The curtain closes on the 76 ^th season of racing on Sunday afternoon October 22 with the 43 ^rd running of the Goblin 250 enduro race for 4-cylinder cars plus the Smash-O-Lantern Demo Derby and Kids Costume Contest.

In the coming weeks, Rockford Speedway officials will release more information regarding the 2023 season, including race nights for specific divisions, special promotions and additional events which will take place at the Speedway and on the Speedway grounds.

Over the course of three days at Rockford Speedway, thirteen championship trophies were handed out and hundreds of feature laps were contested. When the sun set on the 57th Annual National Short Track Championship (NSTC), no one’s light shined brighter than Austin Nason.

The Roscoe native had an NSTC weekend to remember. Saturday night, Nason won the overall Jody Deery Invitational for Super Late Models and followed that up on Sunday with his second straight win in the 188 lap Big 8 Late Model Series main event, becoming just the seventh driver in fifty-seven years to win the event in back-to-back years.

Nason’s final numbers are staggering as far as results and the bottom line. In Super Late Model competition, Nason won the overall title by finishing second in the first feature (49 laps) and first in the second feature (48 laps), dueling with Wisconsin’s Jacob Nottestad in a pair of thrilling finishes. On the Big 8 side, Nason earned Fast Time and a Heat Race win on Saturday and backed that up with the big race in Sunday’s grand finale. All told, thanks to his dominance in both Late Model divisions, Nason left Rockford Speedway over $11,000 richer!

There were several other drivers who had great weekends at NSTC, including 14-year-old Karter Stark. Stark, who has raced across the United States in four-cylinder cars this summer, came to Rockford Speedway on a mission and left with two ‘Speeding Bullet’ awards after claiming Fast Time both Friday night (American Short Trackers) and Saturday night (Midwest Dash Series). While Karter had to settle for a second-place finish behind his dad Kyle on Friday, Karter took the Saturday winnings for himself and claimed victory in the 40 lap feature for the Midwest Dash Series.

South Beloit’s Howie Ware ended his regular season on a sour note at Rockford Speedway. In early July, Ware was the only repeat winner in the very competitive Sportsman class. But over the course of the final third of the race season, Ware saw his good fortune run out, losing his point lead, and never returning to victory lane. However, the 57th NSTC would be very good to the former Rockford Speedway champion. On Friday night, Ware came across the line in second place in the Sportsman main behind Patrick Featherston. Then on Saturday, a late-race charge pushed Ware from sixth place to second at the finish. However, when apparent winner Brandon Eashs’ car was disqualified in post-race tech inspection, Ware inherited the win, making for a celebratory ending to the veteran’s 2022 season.

Drivers in the Roadrunner division kept busy during NSTC Weekend too. Friday night, the division contested a 25-lap feature with Beloit’s Ryan Smith taking the win. Smith, who went four months between his first win and his most recent on Championship Night, ended the year on a winning streak and backed it up Sunday with a third-place finish in the inaugural’ Roadrunner Rumble.’ Kevin Memoli, who finished second in the season long standings, outran the guy that beat him for that track championship, Austin Fowler, to win the five-foot tall trophy and the sizeable bonus money that went with winning the 33 lap Sunday ‘Rumble.’

What started back in 1966 as a territorial battle between Wisconsin short track aces and Illinois hot shoes has become a staple on the short track racing scene in America.

Legendary promoter Hugh Deery christened the event the “National Short Track Championship” and over the years, drivers from twenty-four states and Canada have tried to add their name to the incredible list of drivers who have claimed glory on Rockford’s “high banks.”

And even though scores of drivers have tried to become the one who stands in victory lane wearing the famed wreath, only thirty-one drivers have been lucky enough and skilled enough to end their Sunday drive parked on the piece of real estate every driver craves.

Joe Shear and Steve Carlson were the masters of the National Short Track Championship (NSTC). Both won an amazing EIGHT NSTC titles. Shear won his first in 1972, the same year he won his sixth and final Rockford Speedway track championship. Shear’s final NSTC win came in 1997, topping Carlson in a memorable battle which saw Shear pass Carlson late for the win. The conquest was Shear’s last, as he died just six months later following a bout with cancer. Carlson had the most dominant run of anyone in the history of the event, capturing seven of his eight NSTC wins over a nine-year span from 1992 thru 2000. Carlson came back to claim his record-tying eighth NSTC in 2011.

Even though he is fourth on the all-time NSTC wins list, the name Dick Trickle may be most associated with the National Short Track Championships. Trickle, then a 20-something central Wisconsin racer, was the man who won the first ever event back in 1966, lapping the entire field over the course of 200 laps on his way to victory. The triumph was one of the first major wins of over 1200 in Trickle’s career. Trickle also added NSTC victories in 1978 and 1979, making him one of just five drivers to win the race in consecutive years.

Many other legends have forged their way to victory at NSTC. Eddie Hoffman, who began his career running enduro races at Rockford, was built for the long-distance race as much as anyone. Hoffman is a four-time winner of the event, jumping to number three on the all-time wins list behind only Shear and Carlson and ahead of Trickle after his win in 2013. Rich Bickle, who started his career at Rockford, won two NSTC crowns (1990, 2012) and sandwiched some of short track racing’s biggest wins and a solid NASCAR run in between those two wins. Batesville Arkansas’ Mark Martin still credits his NSTC win in 1977 as the win that propelled him to what would become a NASCAR Hall of Fame career.

Other big names through the years who have won at NSTC include Jim Sauter (1980), Canada’s Junior Hanley, Iowa’s Ramo Stott (1969) and Michigan’s Butch Miller (1991). Drivers like Wayne Stallsworth (1970) from Colorado and Tim Fedewa (1989) from Michigan accomplished their crowning achievement in racing by capturing the gold at the National Short Track Championship.

Martin was the youngest winner of the NSTC (18 years old) and was the only teen to conquer the 200-lap race until the year 2020, when 17-year-old Max Kahler won in a wild finish by storming to the lead on the final lap. Kahler’s win was also significant because it was the last Super Late Model race in the history of the NSTC. One year later, the Big 8 Late Model Series became the headlining act for “One Great Racing Weekend,” with Austin Nason commanding the field and winning his first NSTC.

Will a new name be etched into the record books this weekend? Will a driver like Nason or Jon Reynolds Jr (2015) add their name to the list of multi-time winners? One hundred and eighty-eight laps on a Sunday afternoon in northern Illinois lie ahead.

The 57 ^th Annual National Short Track Championship takes place this Friday Saturday and Sunday September 30, October 1 and 2 at Rockford Speedway. Friday’s “Opening Night” includes racing with the Sportsmen, American Short Trackers, Roadrunners, Bandits and Sixers and gets the green flag at 6 PM. “Short Track Saturday Night” goes racing at 5 PM and includes the Jody Deery Invitational for Super Late Models, plus preliminary races for the Big 8 Late Model Series and features for Hobby Stocks, Midwest Dash Series and Area Sportsmen. “Championship Sunday” starts at 1 PM and features the 188-lap National Short Track Championship for the Big 8 Late Models along with the Mid Am Racing Series and the first-ever Roadrunner Rumble.

The city of Loves Park Illinois is designating Forest Hills Road, between Harlem Road and Illinois State Highway 173, the honorary name of “Jody Deery Way.” The honorary dedication is in memory of Jody M Deery, owner of the Rockford Speedway since 1959.

On Saturday night September 10, the Rockford Speedway crowned champions as part of its historic 75 ^th Anniversary season. It was a season full of parity and excitement and when the curtain came down on a busy 2022 regular season, the following drivers stood tall above the rest at the end of the championship chase…

STANLEY STEEMER NASCAR LATE MODELS

Jake Gille took the top honors during the 75 ^th Anniversary season, winning the Track Championship in the NASCAR Late Models. Gille led the points from Opening Night onward, winning four features along the way while building a 50 plus point lead at the height of his run before winning the title by a final margin of 44 points. The championship is Gille’s second in the Late Models at Rockford Speedway (his first came in 2015) and makes him just the 16 ^th driver in the history of the Speedway to win multiple Track Championships in the Premiere Division (Late Models/Midgets).

Despite not winning a feature in 2022, South Beloit’s Dennis Smith Jr claimed second place in the Late Model standings, outrunning Jon Reynolds Jr for runner up by a margin of five points. Reynolds, the 2021 champion, won just a single feature race yet was consistent enough to finish on the podium in the final tally. Johnny Robinson II finished fourth in Late Model points, with one win on the season. Robinson’s efforts were good enough to claim the Late Model Rookie of the Year honors. Josh Thiering rounded out the top five in Late Model points. A tough end of the year overshadowed a great campaign for Thiering, who ended the season with three wins.

BARGAIN HUNTER SPORTSMEN

For the second time in his career, Chad Smith claimed the championship in a very competitive Sportsmen class. Smith ended the season white-hot, winning the last four Sportsmen feature races. The effort took Smith from third place in the points to a 51-point margin of victory, the highest margin of victory of any champion in any class. Smith’s final stats show five feature wins and six fast times.

The Sportsmen class saw eight different winners in the first nine races of the year before Smith took over in late July. Patrick Featherston captured second place in the standings, with one feature win to his ledger, while Josh Lundy turned many heads with a feature win in June and a third-place finish in the standings. Howie Ware was the only driver besides Smith to win multiple times in the class, collecting three wins. But late season ups and downs led in part to Ware’s fourth place finish in the standings. John Featherston rounded out the top five in Sportsmen points. Chad Lounsbury finished seventh in the standings and won the 2022 Sportsmen Rookie of the Year award.

MILLER LITE AMERICAN SHORT TRACKERS

Matt Berger has drove just about any kind of car at Rockford Speedway through the years and in 2022 he became a champion in second division. Berger, who was the Sportsmen champion in 2010, is the 2022 American Short Tracker champion. Berger paced the competition with four feature wins on the year and won the point battle by a final margin of 49 points. Berger finished the regular season in style, with a feature win in the Short Tracker Championship feature and a win in the NASCAR Late Model feature.

Steven Erickson did his best to keep up with Berger, settling for second place in the final rundown. Erickson was a three-time feature winner in 2022, finding his groove in the middle of the year. Amanda Bohn turned in a solid season, claiming third in the points, just 2 markers ahead of David Russell in fourth. Ronnie Robinson fought off gremlins and bad luck to round out the top five in the standings. Jeremy Watson, Erickson’s teammate, was crowned the 2022 American Short Tracker Rookie of the Year.

KICKSTART BANDITS

The closest battle at Night of Champions was the race for the championship in the Bandit division, with Stephen Hillary and Steve Dickson tied for the point lead headed into the final 20 lap feature of the year. Hillary was able to stay in front of Dickson by just enough to win his first ever Bandit crown, finishing just one spot (and two points) ahead of Dickson when the checkered flag flew. Ryan Finley finished a distant third, just seventeen points back of Hillary in the final rundown. Charlie Schork, who was crowned the Bandit Figure 8 champion a week prior, ended the season fourth, while Todd Snow rounded out the top five.

WINDSOR PIZZA PARLOR ROADRUNNERS

In a fight to the finish, Austin Fowler held off a furious rally by Kevin Memoli to claim the championship in the Roadrunner division. Fowler won three features on the way to his first Roadrunner championship, outlasting the 2018 champion Memoli by just 8 points. Eric Bennett parlayed a strong run at Night of Champions into a third-place points finish, followed by Tyler Vincetich in fourth and Ryan Smith in fifth. Smith claimed his second win of the year on Night of Champions and was one of eight different drivers to win a Roadrunner feature during the 2022 season.

One way or another, one Stanley Steemer NASCAR Late Model racer is going to cash-in this Saturday night at Rockford Speedway!

All summer long, the three fastest qualifiers in NASCAR Late Model qualifying have been offered the Rockford Hard Rock ‘Ultimate Challenge.’ Accepting that challenge has meant starting in the back of the field and trying to finish first in the division’s feature race. The race distances have varied from 30 to 40 and even 76 laps…and even though more drivers than ever have taken the challenge in 2022, NO ONE has claimed the cash.

What kind of cash? Each week the Challenge Bonus goes up $100. As the page turns to Night of Champions, the Ultimate Challenge Bonus stands at $1700! It is still possible that one driver could win it all for themselves this weekend and finally break the bank. HOWEVER, if the 30-lap feature comes and goes and the big money remains unclaimed…an “Ultimate Shootout” looms on the horizon.

As of this writing, seven drivers are currently eligible for the newly created ‘Rockford Hard Rock Ultimate Shootout!’ The race is set as the final event of “Night of Champions” but will only take place if no one claims the $1700 bonus during the 30-lap championship Feature earlier in the night.

The seven drivers currently eligible for the Rockford Hard Rock Ultimate Shootout are Jon Reynolds Jr, Jake Gille, Max Kahler, Johnny Robinson II, Dennis Smith Jr, Jeremy Miller and Austin Nason.

An eighth driver could be eligible if they accept the ‘Challenge’ this Saturday night and fail to win the bonus during the Feature race.

The most competitive division at Rockford Speedway in 2022 gets a

chance to take the whole spotlight this Saturday night August 20.

The Bargain Hunter Sportsmen take center stage this weekend, with the

running of the Hugh Deery Classic presented by Fitzgerald Equipment.

The race is scheduled for 50 laps in length, twice the normal distance

of a regular Sportsmen feature, plus there will be lots of extra prize

money on the line in the race, for the winner and for the rest of the

field.

Coming into this weekend, eight different drivers have won a Sportsmen

feature at Rockford Speedway in 2022. Only two drivers (Chad Smith and

Howie Ware) have won multiple feature races this year, both with 3

wins to their credit. Smith has fought back after a mid-season

struggle to take the point lead with an eye on his second track

championship. Ware is looking to rebound in the final 3 weeks of the

Sportsmen season while also looking for a second championship. Expect

the competition to be fierce this weekend as each of the Sportsmen

competitors look to make their mark in what had become a prestigious

annual event!

The evening also includes racing with the Miller Lite American Short

Trackers, Windsor Pizza Parlor Roadrunners, Janes Café Sixers and a

Vintage/Big Car Figure 8 race! Gates open at 5 PM, with qualifying set

It’s going to be quite a night this Saturday night at Rockford

Speedway, as Metro Medical presents the third Kids Night of the

summer!

Of course, on Kids Night, all Kids 11 and under get in FREE and to go

along with Free Admission, the first 500 Kids through the gates on

Saturday receive a FREE racing poster! This week’s poster features

drivers from both the Miller Lite American Short Tracker division and

the Kickstart Bandits.

On track, the action will be fast and furious, with four divisions

The time has come to celebrate.

The Rockford Speedway 75th Anniversary Celebration takes place this

Saturday night July 16. The evening sets up to be a very busy night

both on the track and off.

On the track, a full night of racing is on tap with six divisions

taking to the track. The Stanley Steemer NASCAR Late Models, Bargain

Hunter Sportsmen, Miller Lite American Short Trackers and Windsor

Pizza Parlor Roadrunners are all in action along with the High School

Racers and the return of the Illini Midgets. The Late Model ‘Ultimate

Challenge’ has ballooned to $1000, meaning one driver could walk out

of the 75th Anniversary Night nearly $1700 richer…who will take ‘the

Challenge?”

Off the track, there’s plenty happening too! The first 500 people

through the gates will be treated to a free piece of Anniversary Cake.

Then, make sure you visit the Memorabilia Display, located in the

NASCAR Room on the west side of the concourse area, which will be full

of vintage pictures, posters, and other awesome Speedway memorabilia.

A special Opening Ceremony will get the night going before the Green

Flag drops. Then at the end of the night, a special “Toast to 75

Years” will take place one hour after the final checkered flag falls

inside the Miller Lite Pavilion.

Grandstands open at 5 PM Saturday night, with Opening Ceremonies

starting at 6:45 PM. Racing begins at 7:07 PM. Adult admission (ages

The busy Holiday slate offers two nights of racing and entertainment

for fans young and old. Fast Cars and Freedom are the name of the game

this Saturday July 2 and Sunday July 3.

Here’s what you can expect to see:

THE WORLDS FASTEST SHORT TRACK SHOW!

The Must See Racing Sprint Cars are back at Rockford Speedway, ready

to rampage around the high banks dazzling all in attendance with their

breakneck speed. The “things with wings” regularly circle the track at

a pace of nearly 2 seconds faster than any other racing vehicle!

Daring drivers from across the country are set to challenge the clock

and each other and duel in a 50-lap feature event. Don’t blink…or

you’ll miss it! Catch the Sprint Cars in action this Saturday night

July 2.

THE STAR SPANGLED 76!

The Stanley Steemer NASCAR Late Models embark on their most grueling

journey Saturday night July 2 with the running of the ‘Star Spangled

76’ lap feature race. The winner of this race could win over $2000,

thanks to a winner’s purse of $1076, a $900 Ultimate Challenge Bonus

and a $100 Fast Qualifier Bonus. Support from Rockford Stanley Steemer

and Kunes Auto Group have helped bolster the purse for all drivers in

the field. Exactly who will take the money home is a mystery. Five

different drivers have won a Late Model feature so far in 2022, with

Jake Gille leading the point standings ahead of four-time track

champion Jon Reynolds Jr. Reynolds is a multi-time winner of the

76-lap race and won his first feature of 2022 just one week ago. Gille

and Max Kahler are the only repeat Late Model winners this year.

THE MIDNIGHT RIDE OF PAUL REVERE!

Sunday night July 3 features one of the most amazing auto races you

will ever see, the Midnight Ride of Paul Revere. The 20 lap Roadrunner

feature is run in TOTAL DARKNESS with each car allotted just one light

on top for scoring purposes. It’s unlike anything you’ll see anywhere

else. If you’ve witnessed the Midnight Ride before, you know how

breathtaking it is. If you’ve never seen the Midnight Ride of Paul

Revere…you NEED to see it for yourself!

FIREWORKS!

The annual Fireworks Extravaganza is scheduled for Sunday night July

3. If you want to cap off your racing weekend gazing at a sky full of

beautiful pyrotechnics, make sure you don’t miss this. The Fireworks

Extravaganza is the last event of the evening on Sunday night.

Point leader Jake Gille had a strong start last Saturday night by

setting fast time, but issues arose at the beginning of the 30 lap

NASCAR Late Model feature event, regulating Gille to a tenth-place

finish. Gille’s point lead was cut nearly in half to 21 points with

four-time and defending track champion Jon Reynolds Jr jumping into

second place behind Gille in the standings. 19-year-old Max Kahler won

his second straight feature Saturday night, outlasting Josh Thiering

in an incredible battle which included 20 laps of incredible

side-by-side racing for the win.

Parody continues to be the name of the game in the Sportsman division,

with five different feature winners in five different races so far

this year. On Saturday night, Josh Lundy led all 25 laps enroute to an

emotional victory which was his first ever in the Sportsmen class.

2017 track champion Chad Smith continues to lead the standings by 17

points over Patrick Featherston and 19 points ahead of Lundy. 2018

track champion Howie Ware sits fourth. The top four in points have all

won a feature this year, along with Bobby Frisch, who sits sixth in

the standings behind Saturday night’s fast qualifier John Featherston.

The Bandit class saw a swing in their standings last weekend after

point leader Steve Dickson encountered issues with his throttle before

the green flag of the 20-lap feature race. The beneficiary of

Dickson’s misfortune was Ryan Finley, who finished second place in the

main event behind Shawn Bowar. Finley’s solid night gave him the

Bandit point lead. The Bandits return to action on Saturday night July

Thirty-two Original Sixers battled for 24 starting spots in the 16 lap

“Sixermania” feature. When the dust settled, Adam Dlubak took his

first win of the year and the point lead in the division. The Sixers

return this week while also racing next Sunday night July 3.

The Short Trackers and Roadrunners return to the track this Saturday

night June 25. Both have been off since May 28. The young and fearless

High School Racers return on Saturday July 2, while Bandit Figure 8

returns on Saturday July 9 for Fan Appreciation Night.

This Saturday night is Byron Generating Station Kids Night, with Kids

11 and under admitted FREE, along with a Kids Candy Scramble at

Intermission and a Poster Giveaway for the first 500 Kids. The NASCAR

Late Models, Sportsmen, American Short Trackers, Roadrunners and

Sixers will all be racing. Race time is 7:07 PM. For more information

With the excitement of Trailer Race night in the rearview, the racers

at Rockford Speedway now focus their attention on the busy summertime

slate of Saturday night racing!

It all starts this Saturday night June 18, with “Hats Off to Dad

Night” presented by Equipment Depot. With Father’s Day on Sunday,

bring dad to the track to watch a busy night of racing featuring SIX

divisions. PLUS, the first 100 Dads through the gate will get a FREE

hat courtesy of several of our great Rockford Speedway supporters.

The evening will once again be headlined by the Stanley Steemer NASCAR

Late Models. Last weekend, young Max Kahler used a late-race caution

to fend off the furious charge of point leader Jake Gille enroute to a

$1,000 payday. The Late Models have seen some great action each race

out this season, expect much of the same this Saturday night!

The Bargain Hunter Sportsmen are back in business this weekend too.

The Sportsmen class has also been very competitive this year, with a

couple of former champions pacing the point standings so far. 2017

champion Chad Smith currently leads the points ahead of 2018 champion

Howie Ware. Both drivers have won features this year. In fact, there

has not been a repeat winner yet in the Sportsmen class in 2022.

The Kickstart Bandits and their fast and furious four-cylinder racing

will be back this weekend too. Steve Dickson and Ryan Finley are

locked in a tight point battle at the top of the standings, with

drivers like Stephen Hillary and Shawn Bowar racking up wins and

looking for more.

The Janes Café Original Sixers are back this week for their second

race night of 2022. The opening race for “Sixermania” back in May saw

nearly 40 entries! Meanwhile, the Illini Midgets and American Super

Cups also return this weekend, filling out a busy slate. And…at the

end of the night…it’s Bandit Figure 8!

ROCKFORD SPEEDWAY MATRIARCH JODY DEERY PASSES AWAY

On Monday afternoon June 13 at 3:22 PM, Jody Deery, the long time

promoter at Rockford Speedway and a pillar of the community, passed

away. Mrs Deery was 97 years old.

Starting in 1966, Mrs Deery and her husband Hugh became sole owners of

Rockford Speedway, which is celebrating its 75th year of operations in

2022. Following Hugh's passing in July 1984, Mrs Deery become one of

the first females to solely operate a racing venue in the United

States.

In 1994, Mrs Deery became the first female to win the prestigious

"Auto Racing Promoter of the Year" award.

Mrs Deery had also been on the nominating committee for the NASCAR

Hall of Fame and on the voting panel for inductees since 2013.

Mrs Deery officially retired from day-to-day duties at the track in

September of 2020.

Funeral arrangements are currently being planned for a date in the near future.

The time has come.

It’s an annual right of summer passage in our neck of the woods.

Summer doesn’t start until Rockford Speedway says so.

This Saturday night June 11, the often imitated never duplicated

“wildest show on wheels” returns to Rockford Speedway as LPT Auto

presents the Original Trailer Race of Destruction!

If you’ve seen it before, you want to see it again. If you’ve never

experienced a Trailer Race in person, this is weekend to do it! Cars,

trucks, vans and SUVs pulling boats, campers and travel in a rolling

demo derby and there’s no winner “til the last trailer trails!”

Before the evening’s main event, there’s plenty of red-hot racing

action. The Stanley Steemer NASCAR Late Models’ 30 lap feature race

pays $1,000 to the winner, thanks to Rockford Stanley Steemer.

Winnebago’s Jake Gille is not only the current Late Model point

leader, but he also pocketed the first $1,000 feature back on Opening

Night May 7 and looks to keep his strong start going this weekend. The

Bargain Hunter Sportsmen, who’ve stole the show each night out, are on

the card this week along with the Kickstart Bandits. The youngsters of

High School Racing make their debut and the night also includes the

return of the Hare and the Hound Challenge Race!

ALL Main Grandstand seating is RESERVED for this Saturday night’s

event, so fans are encouraged to buy their tickets in advance for LPT

Auto’s Original Trailer Race of Destruction. Advance tickets are

General admission seating will be available in the Bleachers on the

backstretch. Race fans are encouraged to get to the track EARLY to

The event, held in the parking lot at Rockford Speedway is a four-day

festival with a little something for everyone. Come ride the rides,

play carnival games, eat great food, and enjoy some time with family

and friends.

Rockford Towne Fair opens on Thursday at 5 PM and runs through Sunday

As out nation celebrates our most solemn holiday this weekend, Rockford Speedway offers a small token of appreciation to all of those who have defended and continue to defend our country.

This Saturday night May 28 is “Salute to Military” Night at Rockford Speedway. All current and former Military Members will be admitted to the track for half price ($7.50) as a token of our appreciation. A Military ID is suggested for entry and discount.

Racing action includes the Stanley Steemer NASCAR Late Models, Bargain Hunter Sportsmen, Miller Lite American Short Trackers, Windsor Pizza Parlor Roadrunners and the Illini Midgets plus the 2022 debut of the One-On-One Spectacular Drags…where YOU can be part of the show!

Northwest Bank presents the first “Kids Night” of the summer this Saturday May 21 and there are plenty of treats in store for Kids this weekend.

All Kids 11 and under are admitted FREE on each of our Kids Nights this summer (May 21, June 25, July 23 and August 13) and this week, the first 500 kids through the gates receive a poster featuring the Stanley Steemer NASCAR Late Models. It’s perfect for getting autographs and for hanging on your wall at home!

At intermission Saturday night, all Kids ages 11 and under will be allowed onto the track (along with a parent or guardian) to take part in the Northwest Bank Kids Coin Scramble. Kids will be separated into different age groups; coins will be spread on the ground and then it’s a gold rush for all kids!

This Saturday night May 14 is “Ladies Night!” All adult females (ages 18 and over) will be admitted to the races for $7.50, which equates to half off a normal adult admission. Ladies will also be privy to other treats throughout the night, including a free flower upon entrance to the Speedway.

The 75th NASCAR Season Opener at Rockford Speedway featured strong fields of cars and exciting feature racing, while also padding the pockets of a couple the nights big winners. When the dust settled on a chilly Saturday evening, Jake Gille (Stanley Steemer NASCAR Late Models), Howie Ware (Bargain Hunter Sportsmen), Kelly Evink (Miller Lite American Short Trackers), Zach Cichon (Windsor Pizza Parlor Roadrunners) and Stephen Hillary (Kickstart Bandits) were the lucky few who were able to lay claim to Opening Night victories.

STANLEY STEEMER NASCAR LATE MODELS

Gille, the 2015 NASCAR Late Model track champion, bagged the $1,000 first prize courtesy of Fitzgerald Equipment for his Opening Night triumph. Starting in third place, the Winnebago resident sprung to the lead on the seventh lap after passing early-race leader Adam Cartwright. Following a Lap 10 caution, Gille was able to establish and maintain a lead over Spring Classic winner Max Kahler and sail to the victory. Kahler came home in second place, five carlengths behind Gille at the line. Willie Nelson had a solid opening night, qualifying third and finishing the feature race in the third position. Cartwright came home fourth after holding off several late-race challenges from reigning Track Champion Jon Reynolds Jr, who settled for fifth.

BARGAIN HUNTER SPORTSMEN

Howie Ware used his outside front row starting spot to explode to the lead at the drop of the green flag in the 25 lap Sportsmen feature. Ware then held off multiple late-race challenges from Chad Smith and raced to the Opening Night win while also collecting the $500 winners bonus courtesy of Murphy’s Bar and Grill. Following Ware and Smith across the line was Alex Weber, who made it a three-way race for the win during the final five laps. John Featherston hung onto fourth after surviving a four-way scramble in the race’s final 10 laps. Sportsmen Rookie Nick Schneider charged from eleventh starting spot to claim fifth.

MILLER LITE AMERICAN SHORT TRACKERS

Reigning track champion Kelly Evink started his title defense the right way, setting fast time, winning his heat and winning the 25-lap season opening race for the mighty four cylinders. Evink’s road to victory wasn’t easy though, as raced from an eighth place starting spot and survived multiple yellow flags the onset of the race. Once things settled down, Evink began his pursuit of leader Steven Erickson. The two raced side-by-side for seven laps before Evink completed the pass for the lead on lap 10. But even with Evink out front, Erickson kept the pressure on and made Evink earn his keep. A late race restart allowed Evink the space he needed to ease to victory, while Erickson held off persistent advances from Matt Berger for second. Berger ended up third, followed by David Russell in fourth and Amanda Bohn in fifth.

WINDSOR PIZZA PARLOR ROADRUNNERS

Zach Cichon made it look easy in winning the 20-lap season opening feature for the Roadrunner class. The Poplar Grove resident started from the outside front row and outran the 16-car starting field in a caution free affair. Terry Ciano Jr finished second after holding off a hard charging Austin Fowler, who settled for third after making a thrilling drive from his eleventh starting position. Greg Batelli and Tyler Vincetich rounded out the top five.

KICKSTART BANDITS

Stephen Hillary may have turned in the most dominant effort of the night, taking the lead on lap 3 of the 20-lap feature and sailing to victory. Ryan Finley finished second ahead of Steve Dickson, who escaped near disaster early in the race and stormed back to collect third. Jeff Allendorf came home fourth and Charlie Schork was fifth.

This Saturday night May 7 marks the return of Saturday night racing at Rockford Speedway with the 75th NASCAR Season Opener!

Opening Night is sure to be an exciting night, with FIVE divisions on the schedule. The headlining race of the night is the $1,000 to win 30 lap feature race for the Stanley Steemer NASCAR Late Models, the first of four features this summer to payout four-figures to the winner. This Saturday night’s big-money Late Model main event is sponsored by Fitzgerald Equipment. KAHLER CONQUERS SPRING CLASSIC!

Max Kahler turned in a nearly flawless performance at Rockford Speedway’s 45th Annual Spring Classic Saturday night.

The 19-year-old from Caledonia Illinois was the fastest car in practice and backed that up by setting the fastest time in Qualifying and then dominated the 88-lap season opening race for the Big 8 Late Model Series en route to his second career Series victory.

Kahler, who started in the tenth position, avoided some early race chaos, and pounced forward on a lap 2 restart, putting himself into position to jump to the race lead on the eighth lap. Over the course of the race’s final 80 laps, Kahler was able to outrun and outlast his competition while speeding to a first-place payday of $2,088.

Dale Nottestad, the 2021 Spring Classic winner, was right in the middle of the early race chaos that Kahler was able to avoid. Nottestad’s involvement in that accident sent him and several other cars to the tail of the field. Over the course of the race’s final 86 laps, Nottestad methodically marched from the rear of the field to a second-place finish.

Rockford Speedway regular Dennis Smith Jr turned in a solid run, earning third place. Two-time Series champion Casey Johnson came home fourth after getting past Jim Olson in the race’s final five laps. Olson hung on to fifth place ahead of Franc Beldowski, who finished sixth.

Stephen Scheel’s persistent performance at Spring Classic saw him advance from an 18th place starting spot to a seventh-place finish, earning himself a $100 bonus as the Powersource Racing Engines ‘Power Mover of the Race.’

In other action Saturday night, Sheridan’s Ron Vandemier Jr blasted to the lead from deep in the field on the way to a $1000 victory in the Mid Am Racing Series 44 lap main event, ran in memory of former Rockford Speedway announcer John Magnuson Jr, who passed away last fall. McHenry’s Rick Corso finished second while Coal City’s Cody Clubb came home third.

Loves Parks’ Cody Armato led wire-to-wire on the way to victory in the 25 lap ‘Bandit Blast.” The win netted Armato a total of $310, including the $250 first place money and a $60 bonus for leading the most laps. Armato’s teammate Nick Schneider finished in second place, ahead of Mark Bielefeldt in third. Steve Dickson was fourth, just ahead of Zach Legner in fifth.

PAST SERIES CHAMPIONS, FORMER SPRING CLASSIC WINNERS AMONG EARLY ROCKFORD ENTRANTS

Slowly but surely, Old Man Winter’s grip on the Midwest is beginning to weaken. And with that, one fact is perfectly clear…Late Model Showtime is not far away.

The Big 8 Late Model Series is geared up in preparation for Saturday night April 23 and the 45th running of the Spring Classic at Rockford Speedway. And as race day draws closer, a first wave on entries includes some of the top Late Model racers in the Midwest.

With still over a week until race day, five Big 8 Series championships, six Spring Classic wins and forty-one career Big 8 Series wins are represented among those drivers who will compete on Rockford’s high banks.

Early entrants for Spring Classic include reigning Big 8 Late Model Series champion Jon Reynolds Jr, who captured his second career Series title last year while also becoming a four-time track champion at Rockford Speedway in 2021. Reynolds is also a past Spring Classic winner, tasting victory in 2012.

Last April’s Spring Classic winner, Dale Nottestad, returns to Rockford trying to become just the fourth driver in history to win the event three or more times. Nottestad won his first Spring Classic in 2011 and is also a past winner of the Big 8 ‘108’ at Rockford’s National Short Track Championships.

Two-time Big 8 Series champion Casey Johnson returns to Rockford, looking to add a second Spring Classic to his hearty list of victories in midwestern Late Model racing. Johnson was a winner last year on the Big 8 tour, taking the top spot among a star-studded field at Madison International Speedway last July.

Austin Nason aims to stay on top at Rockford when Spring Classic comes around. Nason, a six-time winner in Big 8 Series competition, was dominant enroute to victory in last Fall’s 188-lap National Short Track Championship at Rockford. The Roscoe Illinois resident has also started his 2022 season strong with impressive runs in Super Late Model competition.

Teenager Max Kahler is no stranger to victory lane at Rockford Speedway. ‘The Caledonia Kid’ is a past Big 8 winner at Rockford and in 2020 became one of the youngest winners of the National Short Track Championship at age 17. Kahler is also the 2020 Big 8 Series champion, claiming the crown in dramatic fashion at Oktoberfest.

Only three drivers have won multiple Spring Classics in Big 8 Series history. One of those drivers is Mike Beyer. The Machesney Park native, who is always tough at his home track, pocketed his two Spring Classic wins in 2005 and 2006 and, like Nottestad, is aiming to make history with his third Spring Classic win.

The 45th Annual Spring Classic kicks off the new season for the Big 8 Late Model Series and is also the first event of the historic 75th season of racing at Rockford Speedway. For the first time ever, Spring Classic takes place at night, with the green flag set to wave at 5 PM. As we all know, things have not been easy financially over the course

of the last 24 months.

A worldwide pandemic, job loss, rising costs of food, gas and

utilities have taken a toll on all of us in one way or another.

But rest assured, in a news cycle filled with gloom and doom, there is

some good news on the horizon.

Officials at Rockford Speedway are proud to announce purse increases

for ALL NASCAR sanctioned divisions in 2022. In addition, NASCAR Late

Model drivers are scheduled to race for $1000 to win on four different

nights throughout the summer!

Also, for a fourth consecutive year, there will be NO increase in the

price of a Pit Pass and there’s NO increase in admission prices for

grandstand tickets in 2022!

As mentioned earlier, the NASCAR Late Model division races for $1000

to win on four different occasions in 2022. Those big paydays for Late

Model drivers are slated for the following events…

Kevin Olson’s passing

Since the news of Kevin Olson’s passing earlier this February made us all shiver, the Deery Family and many around Rockford Speedway have remained in shock. KO was one of the first-year drivers at the start of the RoadRunners division, campaigning a potent Opel Cadet, flipping on one of those early nights and graciously accepting a roll-over trophy from our Hugh Deery on the front straight. After a few Late Model starts in that era, Kevin’s Rockford Speedway races from then on would be more sporadic; but when the midget race cars came to town, many fans in the stands cheered on our local hero! His last start at the high banked quarter-mile came when it was covered in dirt for the 2016 event. In the years between, Kevin and family would enjoy attending events like the National Short Track Championships and even the Goblin Enduro.

While competing on the national stage, becoming a many-time midget champion and HoF inductee, KO helped keep Rockford on the racing map; not only for his racing accomplishments but even attempting a Golf Cart speed record at the Rockford Airport! Among his exploits all over the United States, and in other countries, everyone knew he was a racer from Rockford. From letters he wrote to National Speed Sport News, many columns penned for the Sprint Car & Midget magazine, and experts from his book "Cages Are For Monkeys"; we were always thankful for the Rockford Speedway references. Forever grateful for the attention and detail he described at the time of Jody Deery’s retirement in 2020; those complimentary words of which he made every effort ensuring Jody saw, a true retrospect of the kind of person Kevin was.

We were proud to induct him into our Walk of Fame years ago. His iconic signature and hand prints will be

preserved by the track's flagstand, among other Rockford Speedway faithful. Kevin's legacy will live on in many ways. Godspeed KO!

BUSY AND EXCITING SCHEDULE ANNOUNCED FOR ROCKFORD SPEEDWAY’S 75th SEASON

After a winter full of planning, officials at Rockford Speedway have announced the complete Schedule of Events for the track’s 75th Anniversary Season.

Thirty-five events are scheduled for the high banks in 2022, including Saturday night racing with the NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Weekly Series, Car Shows and Swap Meets, Carnivals, Drifting events and more.

The first race of the new season takes place on Saturday night April 23, with the 45th Annual Spring Classic being run “under the lights” for the first-time ever! Spring Classic is highlighted by an 88-lap feature for the Big 8 Late Model Series & also includes the Mid-Am Racing Series and Bandits. The 45th Annual Spring Classic takes the green flag at 5 PM on April 23.

Twelve champions will be crowned at the 57th running of the National Short Track Championships on Friday, Saturday and Sunday September 30, October 1 and October 2. The weekend begins with a five-division smorgasbord on “Opening Night” Friday and continues with the return of Super Late Models on “Short Track Saturday Night” along with Big 8 Late Model Series preliminary races and a second night of Sportsman racing plus the Midwest Dash Series and Hobby Stocks. Sunday is headlined by the 188-lap Big 8 National Short Track Championship, plus the Mid-Am Racing Series and the first-ever “Roadrunner Rumble” for the Top 12 drivers in 2022 Roadrunner point standings.

Saturday night weekly racing kicks off on Saturday May 7 with the 75th NASCAR Season Opener and concludes on Saturday September 10 with NASCAR Night of Champions. Special Saturday night shows include the 75th Anniversary Celebration (Saturday July 16) and the Hugh Deery Classic (Saturday August 20), which is headlined by a 50 lap Sportsman main event.

Traditional favorites return in 2022 including the Original Trailer Race of Destruction (Saturday June 11) and the World Famous Figure 8 Trailer Race (Saturday August 6). Two days of racing over Independence Day Weekend make up the first ever “Independence Speed Weekend” on Saturday and Sunday July 2 & 3. Saturdays program is highlighted by the return of the Must-See Racing Sprint Cars and the traditional NASCAR Late Model ‘Star Spangled 76,’ while Sunday’s card includes the Roadrunner “Midnight Ride of Paul Revere” race in total darkness and the 10,000 Watt Fireworks Extravaganza.

The Beatin and Bangin Boat Race sails on Saturday August 27 and the fall thriller known as ‘Night of Thrills’ is back on Saturday September 17 and this year includes Figure 8 School Bus Racing, Monster Trucks, a Jet Car Meltdown, Spectacular Drags, Wild Stunts, Fireworks and much more!

Other returning fan favorites include Kids Nights (May 21, June 25, July 23 and August 13), Ladies Night (May 14) and Fan Appreciation Night (July 9) plus the Bahama Bracket Nationals return for their 32nd year on Saturday and Sunday October 15 and 16.

Three enduro races dot the schedule in 2022, with the first scheduled for Saturday April 30 (the WXRX Ironman 250 for 4 cylinder cars) while the final two (The Ca$h of Cow 200 6 cylinder enduro and the Goblin 250 4 cylinder enduro) bring the curtain down on the racing season Saturday and Sunday October 22 and 23.

An incredibly diverse schedule awaits “the Best Weekly Warriors in the Country” in the summer of 2022.

Officials with the Big 8 Late Model Series have announced a nine-race schedule for the upcoming race season, which crosses three states and visits eight different tracks, including bullrings, powerful half miles and one legendary oval.

The 18th season of Big 8 Late Model Series racing begins where it always has, but with a twist. Rockford Speedway’s 45th Annual Spring Classic will be contested ‘under the lights’ for the first time ever on Saturday April 23 at 5 PM. The opening round of 2022 is highlighted by an 88-lap Big 8 Series main event and features the Mid American Stock Car Series and 4-cylinder Bandits running in support.

The second race of the season takes place in the Hawkeye State, with “Clash at the Downs VIII” at Hawkeye Downs in Cedar Rapids Iowa on Friday June 3. The Hawkeye date has become a traditional early season stop along the Big 8 tour and has set the tone for many championship chases in recent years.

History will be made in the years’ third event, as the Big 8 Late Model Series makes its first-ever stop at Tomah-Sparta Speedway on Friday July 1. Late Model racing hasn’t happened much in recent vintage at the 3/8 mile which is promoted by former Big 8 Series starter Greg Oliver, but the Inaugural “Firecracker 58” is sure to be an unpredictable round of racing at a track full of grassroots racing history.

The month of July ends with trips to tracks which have become traditional stops along the Big 8 trail. Friday night July 22, the Big 8’s best head to Wausau Wisconsin for the opening night of the Larry Detjens Memorial Weekend at State Park Speedway. One week later, on Friday July 29, Big 8 racing returns to “Wisconsin’s Fastest Half Mile” for the “Salute to Legends” at Madison International Speedway as part of Racers Reunion Night.

For the second straight year and the fourth time ever, the Big 8 Late Model Series visits “America’s Legendary Oval,” with a trip to the Milwaukee Mile on Sunday August 28. Again in 2022, Big 8 Late Model racers compete in a 38-lap race that serves as the opening act for the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards, which headlines the day with their nationally televised 150 lap race.

The Big 8 Late Model Series season ends with a bang, as ‘three races in three weeks’ determine the 2022 Series champion. Saturday September 24, Big 8 racing returns to Dells Raceway Park for the Midwest Championship Showdown. The trip to DRP marks the first time in seven years the Big 8 Late Model Series takes its show on the road to the legendary 1/3 mile.

One week later, on Saturday and Sunday October 1 and 2, the Big 8 Late Model Series takes center stage as part of the 57th Annual National Short Track Championships at Rockford Speedway. Saturday’s show consists of Qualifying and Preliminary Races, with Sunday headlined by the 188 lap National Short Track Championship.

Six days later, on Saturday October 8, a Big 8 Late Model Series champion is crowned as part of the 53rd Oktoberfest Racing Weekend at the La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway. The Oktoberfest format includes a unique combination of Qualifying Features and B Mains to set up a 38 lap sprint to the championship that has included several dramatic finishes in recent years.

Officials at Rockford Speedway are proud to announce an ambitious list

of 30 race dates for the 2022 racing season, which marks the 75th

consecutive year of operations for the facility which first opened its

gates in 1948.

The 2022 season at Rockford Speedway includes the return many

fan-favorite events. The first green flag of the year is set to fly on

Saturday evening April 23 with the Big 8 Late Model Series Spring

Classic, which will be contested under the lights for the first time

ever (5 PM start time). “The Best Weekly Warriors in the Country” kick

off their 2022 campaign with a full racing program highlighted by an

88-lap main event.

One week later, on Saturday afternoon April 30, the popular WXRX 200

lap 4-cylinder enduro takes to the track. Enduro races also end the

season a few months later, with the 6 cylinder “Cash or Cow” 200 lap

race on Saturday October 22 and the 42nd annual Goblin 250 4-cylinder

enduro on Sunday October 23.

The stars of Saturday night are set to shine bright once again at

Rockford Speedway in 2022, with the 75th NASCAR Season Opener taking

center stage on Saturday night May 7. NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Weekly

Series Racing points will be earned starting on Opening Night in May

through Saturday September 10th’s NASCAR ‘Night of Champions.’ Also

included in the Saturday night slate this summer is the ‘75th

Anniversary Celebration’ on July 16. This event will be filled with

past champions, faces from the Speedway’s long and storied history and

exciting racing action.

Staples of summertime like the Original Trailer Race of Destruction

(June 11), World Famous Figure 8 Trailer Race (August 6), Night of

Thrills (September 16) and the Beatin’ & Bangin’ Boat Race (August 27)

are back in 2022 along with the Star-Spangled Celebration (July 2) and

the Fireworks Extravaganza & Midnight Ride of Paul Revere (July 3).

The season ends with traditional specials like the 57th Annual

National Short Track Championships (September 30, October 1 and

October 2) and the 32nd Annual Bahama Bracket Nationals (October 15

and 16). This year’s National Short Track Championships are headlined

by the Big 8 Late Model Series on Sunday afternoon while the Super

Late Models return to let the sparks fly on ‘Short Track Saturday

Night.’

In the coming weeks, Rockford Speedway officials will release more

information regarding the 2022 schedule, including race nights for

specific divisions, special promotions and additional events which

Loves Park, Ill., October 3—Fulfilling a life-long racing dream, Austin Nason came home the winner of the 56th annual National Short Track Championships Big 8 Late Model Series stock car special at Rockford Speedway Sunday afternoon.

As a youngster, Nason, watched his dad, Fred, compete at the quarter-mile, high-banked, paved oval, joining the competition himself when he was a teenager. Sunday afternoon saw the 25-year-old Nason, from Roscoe, Ill., score a convincing victory in the 188-lap contest, taking the checkered flag with a 1.552-second margin over second place finisher, Jake Gille. Nason picked up $6,008 for his winning effort as he became the race’s 32nd different winner during its history.

At about the 117-lap mark, Nason wheeled his karkorner.net/B&C’s Transmissions/Nason’s Landscaping/Erickson Auto Parts/Crazy Times-sponsored Chevrolet No. 14 passed Gille for the lead and never looked back, slowed only by four yellow flags that flew as Nason held the number one spot. Finishing behind Nason and Gille were three-time Rockford late model titlist and early race leader Michael Bilderback, Dennis Smith Jr. and two-time NSTC winner Casey Johnson. Jacob Nottestad, Grant Brown, Josh Thiering, Willie Nelson and seven-time Rockford track champion Bobby Wilberg rounded out the “top 10.”

“It’s awesome. I’ve been chasing this thing since I was 16,” said Nason after the race. “I’ve finished second and I’ve wrecked. This weekend is a dream come true. We won three out of four of the late model races this weekend. I didn’t want to see all those yellows (flags). We fired off real good on the restarts but it took five laps to really get going.

“I watched my dad race here. I remember being a little kid here and watching from the fence and playing in the playground. I’m glad to finally be here (in victory lane).”

Defending race winner Max Kahler grabbed Big 8 fast time honors on Saturday. Starting 10th in the feature field, Kahler was caught up in a multi-car melee between turns one and two on the second lap and was knocked out of the race, completing only one lap. Heat races on Saturday evening, which set the field, were won by Nason, Johnson, Thiering and Wilberg. Smith won the 20-lap last chance race on Sunday.

Saturday saw Nason and Rich Bickle Jr. share victory honors in the Rich Bickle Twin 45s Invitational for super late models.

Winning for the fourth time in his career during Rockford’s NSTC weekend, Ron Vandermeir Jr. captured the 50-lap Mid Am Racing Series main event. The Sheridan, Ill., racer drove his Chevy to the checkered flag, finishing ahead of Timmy Stewart by 5.423 seconds. Fast qualifier Kenny Benson ended up third followed by Cody Clubb, Dale Lecus Jr. and Clay Curts. A field of 19 started the 50 lapper.

In other races on Sunday, 12-year-old Brandyn Wind of Woodridge, Ill., won the 25-lap American Super Cup Series feature race ahead of Mick Ellis and Sean Eurick while Tom Gille, in the John Knaus-tribute ’81 Camaro, came home in the top spot in the Northern Outlaw Vintage Series headliner.

Loves Park, IL – Racing kicked off at Rockford Speedway for the 44th Annual Spring Classic under blue skies Saturday afternoon. The Big 8 Late Models and the Mid-American Racing Series took to the track to kick the 74th season at Rockford Speedway.

Nottestad, the Cambridge, Wisconsin native, saw success early in the day as he captured fast time in qualifying with a time of 13.677. This success would carry into the feature event of the afternoon where wheeled his machine to victory in the 88 lap Big 8 Late Model Feature.

Starting fourteenth, in the 22-car field, Nottestad, the race leader from the 27th lap, and held that position through the rest of the race until the checkered flag was thrown on lap 88. Nick Egan, Jon Reynolds Jr, Tom Berns, and Mike Lloyd rounded out the top 5.

The next event for the Big 8 Late Model Series is one week away at the Slinger Super Speedway for their Season Opener. The series will highlight opening day with at 88 lap feature events.

National Short Track Championship Super Late Model 200

“Kahler’s Dream Became A Reality”

“I never imagined waking up out of bed and winning the National Short Track Championship” 17 year old Max Kahler said as he couldn’t believe he had just won the NSTC 200. 16 cars would show up to race for a payout of $5000.00 to the winner. There were several cautions in this race. One of them is when the 45 of Kyle Shear had hit a streak of oil on the track put down by another car and him riding on the wall in turns 3 and 4. Most of the race saw battles for the lead with Alex Prunty and Austin Nason, as these drivers would beat and bang throughout the race. Casey Johnson, a 2 time NSTC winner, ended up having a shortened day after something broke in his rear end with 74 laps remaining. Rich Bickle had completed all but 75 laps as his car’s radiator would end up having issues and not being able to continue. With 1 lap remaining Max Kahler and Dale Nottestad would battle for the lead and in turns 1 and 2 Nottestad was pushed up high as Kahler went by him. Michael Bilderback was also able to sneak by and it was Kahler crossing the finish line first. After the race Dale Nottestad did not pass post race tech. Top 10 1. Kahler 2. Bilderback 3. Nason 4. Big 8 Late Models 108 Lap Feature

“Bilderback Was In A Different League”

The Big 8 Late Models were supposed to have race on Saturday October 3rd but mother nature had other plans as the race was pushed off until Sunday. 22 cars would do battle as the season is coming to an end with the last race next weekend at Oktoberfest. Jeremy Miller was fast qualifier with a 13.659. Ryan Gutknecht and Mitch Haver started on the front row. Gutknecht got out to the lead in the early going. Michael Bilderback started in row 3 on the inside and had to maneuver his way to the outside and challenge for the lead. Bilderback battled Gutknecht for a few laps and was able to pass him for the lead. Once Bilderback took the lead he was able to distance himself from the field and had about a half a track lead over 2nd place. Top 5 1. Bilderback 2. Jeremy Miller 3. Jacob Nottestad 4. 16 cars would race in the 40 lap event Nick Schneider would get out to the lead in the beginning and would hold off a few challenges until George Sparkman would make his way to the front and challenge Schneider for the lead. These two would duke it out and make contact but both drivers held on and the battle continued. Heat 1 was won by Jerry Stafford II, Heat 2 was won by Rhett Barkau and Heat 3 was won by Jon Reynolds Jr. There were 21 cars to race in the 40 Lap Feature. David Thomason and Rhett Barkau were the front row. Barkau got out to the lead in the early going of the event. Michael Bilderback who started outside row 4 was able to catch Barkau near the mid way point of the feature and challenge for the lead. With about 15 laps to go, Bilderback was able to pass Barkau and take over the lead. Bilderback tried to distance himself from the rest of the field until around lap 35 when Mike Coleman had car issues and spun out in turn 3 causing a caution flag to come out. This regrouped the field bringing everyone back together. The fast qualifier of Jerry Gille restarted in 2nd and he went to challenge Bilderback to try to take the lead but there just wasn’t gonna be enough laps as Bilderback held on for the win. Top 5 1. Wagner was able to move through the field and take the lead away from Fowler and with only a handful of laps remaining, Speciale would pass Fowler also. Loves Park, IL- This weekend’s 55th annual National Short Track Championship could be monumental for Jon Reynolds, Jr. Reynolds aka ‘Driver X’ is seeking his third NASCAR Stanley Steemer Late Model Championship at his home track and holds a 21 point advantage over Mike Beyer heading into Friday Night’s NASCAR Night of Champions. The 2014 and 2018 Rockford Speedway Track Champion will also compete in Saturday night’s Big 8 Late Model Series 108 lap feature and Sunday’s National Short Track Championship 200 lap bout.

No driver has found more success on the Saturday night NSTC stage than Reynolds who leads all other drivers with four career wins in the Saturday headline event. Somehow, the X car always seems to be in the mix as the checkered flag waves at NSTC. Having won the inaugural Big 8 Series Championship in 2005, Reynolds who is also a two-time Slinger Super Speedway Late Model Champion sits third on the all-time wins list in Big 8 Series history with twelve, one behind Jeremy Miller and just three behind Michael Bilderback. Reynolds father, Jon Reynolds, Sr was the first ever Big 8 Series feature winner, winning the 2004 NSTC debut of the popular weekly late model series.

Sunday’s 200 lap contest has been a tougher story for Reynolds. As is the case with most drivers in the Sunday marquee event, a few have slipped away over the past few years. Mechanical issues while leading and pulling away from the field of contenders cost him the chance of a repeat win in 2016. With 2015 marking his only NSTC 200 win, a win on Sunday would make him just the tenth multi-time winner of the original year end special that was first won by racing legend Dick Trickle in 1966.

‘One Great Racing Weekend’ will feature three days of racing October 2-4. Main gates will open at 3pm on Friday with Faster Than a Speeding Bullet Qualifying at 4pm, racing will begin at 6pm. Saturday’s spectator gates open at 2pm with qualifications at 2:15pm and racing at 5pm. Sunday morning will see gates open at 11am for a fan autograph session, with racing beginning at 1pm on Sunday afternoon. Friday admission prices are $18 for adults, $8 for kids ages 6-11 with ‘tots’ ages five and under admitted free. Adult admission is $22 on Saturday with kids tickets at $11 and ages five and under $4. Sunday prices are $25 for adults, $12 for kids and $6 for tots. Kahler Looks for Second Big 8 Rockford Win Saturday Night

Loves Park, IL- His age matches the number on his car. Max Kahler, driver of the #17 Late Model at Rockford Speedway has three wins this season at his home track and on Saturday Night he will try to make it two consecutive Big 8 Late Model Series wins at the historic quarter mile high banked oval. Kahler heads into this weekend’s 55th annual National Short Track Championship having won the most recent Big 8 event at Rockford, celebrating Independence Day in victory lane.

A host of weekly Late Model drivers from around the region are expected for Saturday night’s Big 8 Series headliner. Slinger Super Speedway Champion Jacob Nottestad leads Kahler by a mere two points with just two events remaining on the series’ calendar. Local favorite Tom Gille is just twenty-six tallies behind the young point leaders and has had the hot hand as of late. Gille, whose son and brother are both former Rockford track champions was victorious in late August at Rockford, won his first Big 8 event in late July at State Park Speedway in Wausau and looks to narrow the point gap in an event he finished second in a year ago. The lead three are just ahead of 2019 Hawkeye Downs Big 8 winner Nick Egan and former NASCAR Division IV National Champion, Minnesota’s Grant Brown.

Joining the Big 8 Late Model Series on the Saturday Night line-up is the Midwest Dash Series for a 40 lap feature. Phil Malouf of Manitowish Waters, WI currently leads the Dash points over Edgerton native Lyle Phillips. Malouf is a former bracket winner at Rockford’s annual Bahama Bracket Nationals. Both divisions will also race their preliminary events Saturday night as will the Super Late Models who will then race the 200 lap NSTC Championship feature on Sunday afternoon.

With tonight being the prelude to the championship and only 25 points separating 5th to 1st place in points, this was a very important race for those cars in the top 5 in points. In the early going of the race Tim Finstad from Poynette, WI, got out the a really commanding lead until a caution flag flew as David Russell Jr who was running in the top 5, had his upper control arm fail , causing him to make contact with the wall and not able to continue on. In the early going of the feature, it was Jeremy Watson who was leading the majority of the laps, with a handful of laps left, Braden set his sites to challenge Watson for the lead as these two would run side by side for 5-6 laps. “Fowler Brings Out The Broom, And The Toilet Paper”

Heat 1 was won by Gregg Batelli and Heat 2 was won by Austin Fowler. The Roadrunners also ran the “Outhouse” Challenge Race which a driver would race against the clock by starting at the start finish line and getting out of the car, then running and jumping a barrier wall and running inside of an outhouse grabbing a lot of toilet paper and running out and jumping the barrier wall. And getting into the car and racing their car around the track 1 lap. Fowler had fast time and a lot of toilet paper too. In the feature, Fowler got out to an early lead, but with about 5 laps to go Kevin Memoli had caught Fowler and the challenge was on. Coming out of turn 4 on the last lap it was now or never for Memoli as the 2 drivers would drag race to the finish line, but it was Fowler winning by a quarter of a car. In post race technical inspection the #3 of Memoli did not pass handing second position to Phil Speciale. Top 5 1. Fowler 2. Phil Speciale 3. Jeff Allendorf 4. Ryan Smith 5. Justin Wagner

The heat race was won by Rich Drangmeister of Crown Point, IN. In the feature it was Scott Koerner of Joliet, IL that got out to the lead. With about 3 laps to go, Koerner experienced engine issues that caused his to slow off the pace allowing Finley from Waterman, IL to take the lead and get his first feature win of the 2020 season at Rockford. Original Sixers Championship

“ Conniff Stuns The Crowd, Gets The Feature Win And Championship”

Heat 1 was won by Bryan Nalen Sr., Heat 2 was won by Mathew Nielson, Heat 3 was won by Trenton Sauer and Heat 4 was won by Bryan Nalen Jr. Only 22 points separated 4th and 1st place. Justin Tyler who was the points leader and Dakota Paris who was 3rd in points, both failed to transfer to the A Main event and had to race in the B Main feature. In The B Main event, only the top 4 would transfer to the feature. Paris was able to get the B Main win and Tyler was able to place in the top 4 and transfer also. Lots of drama ensued in the A Main as Tyler had issues and the 2nd place points car of David Cavin had issues as well, Both cars ended up at the tail end of the race as Tyler ended up being a lap down. Paris ended up having issues too and wasn’t able to finish the race. Dallas Conniff who was sitting in 4th place in points was able to win the feature and with everyone else in the top 4 in points having rough nights, Conniff was able to win his first ever championship. It was an emotional night for him as he thanked his family and friends for support. Top 5 in points ending the season: 1. Dallas Conniff 2. David Cavin 3. Justin Tyler 4. Dakota Paris 5. “Schneider Following Footsteps Of His Dad, Wins Another Championship”

34 points separated Nick Schneider and Cody Armato as it would come down to one of these drivers winning the championship. In the early going of the figure 8 it was Jeremy Watson with the Lead. Charles Schork would eventually get by Watson and getting the win. But it was the “Wild Child” Nick Schneider, winning the overall points championship. During the interview Schneider mentioned that his father the late Tom Schneider was the King of the figure 8.

Loves Park, IL- NASCAR Champions will be crowned this Friday night October 2 at Rockford Speedway as five racing divisions are set for the Opening night of the 55th annual National Short Track Championships. The NASCAR Late Models will be joined by the Sportsmen, American Short Trackers, Bandits and RoadRunners as all divisions will contest preliminary as well as feature events during the first of three days of action on the quarter mile paved oval during ‘One Great Racing Weekend’.

Seeking his third Rockford Speedway NASCAR Late Model title is Driver X, Jon Reynolds, Jr. Having won his first title in 2014 and again taking top honors in 2018, Reynolds holds a 21-point lead over Mike Beyer. Beyer, a long time late model competitor and Champion throughout the region has returned to his weekly roots after a trip to race during Florida’s Speedweeks this past February. Early season contender Dennis Smith, Jr who has Rockford titles in RoadRunner and Figure 8 action, sits third in the standings, 43 points behind Reynolds. A 40 lap Championship feature will highlight the Friday night racing program.

Defending Sportsmen Champion Johnny Robinson finds himself 37 markers behind his brother Trevor Robinson in the NASCAR Sportsmen Championship Hunt. Trevor is looking to record his first ever Sportsmen title and is 46 points ahead of 2018 Sportsmen Champion Howie Ware heading into Friday night’s 30 lap event. Also contesting a 30 lap feature will be the American Short Trackers. With the tightest point battle of the season, the AST division will crown its fourth first-time Champion in as many years. Veteran Tim Finstad has a one-point advantage over rookie Shawn Bowar with David Russell just eight points out of the lead and rookies Nick Schneider (-14) and Shawn Rickelman (-25) behind Finstad.

The RoadRunners and Bandit divisions will each have 25 lap feature events to conclude their seasons during NASCAR Night of Champions. Former Late Model driver Justin Wagner leads former Midwest Enduro standout Phil Speciale and 2016 RoadRunner Challenge Champion Jeff Allendorf heading into the RoadRunner Championship bout. Another driver in search of their first career Rockford Champions’ Coat is Cody Armato. Armato leads Erik Pearson by 19 points with the duo well ahead of third place point man Randall Sadler.

Outsider Johnson Continues to Shine at Rockford, Looks to Repeat as National Short Track Champion

Loves Park, IL- The short track world can agree that Rockford Speedway is not an easy place to consistently run well at, especially if you are not one of the local stars. The home field advantage of knowing the character of the track is at a premium when racing high speed late models at the quarter mile paved oval originally built for open wheel midget cars in 1948. In the past decade, no outsider has made the most of their visits to Rockford than Casey Johnson. The accomplished driver from Edgerton, WI looks to continue that Rockford success during the 55th National Short Track Championships scheduled October 2-4, 2020.

The two-time and defending National Short Track Champion has found success beyond Sunday of NSTC. Always a threat to win when making a rare visit during weekly Saturday night action at Rockford years ago, Johnson remains a favorite each time his #5 hits the high banks. A 2010 Spring Classic win was his first Rockford victory, which he has added a pair of Saturday night Big 8 NSTC wins to. A couple close calls have met Johnson during the 200 lap Sunday finale which could have taken his win total in the annual classic from two to four, including a runner-up to Rich Bickle, Jr in 2012.

Just last weekend, Johnson captured his sixth Wisconsin State Championship at Jefferson Speedway where he is a three-time track Champion. Johnson won the 2019 Kar Korner All-Star 100 at Rockford on his way to the ARCA Midwest Tour Championship. Super Late Model victories at Slinger, Wisconsin International and Dells Raceway Park have kept the current Midwest Tour point leader Johnson busy this season. A two-time Champion in both Tundra Super Late Model and Big 8 Late Model action, Johnson has two track Championships in Wisconsin International Raceway’s Fox River Racing Club as well as a WIR Red, White and Blue State Championship. He finished in the runner-up position during the year’s Slinger Nationals and posted two top five efforts at Anderson Speedway as well. Both tracks are likened to Rockford which will host its only Super Late Model event of the season October 4.

Loves Park, IL- Michael Bilderback took his weekly Late Model and put Chicagoland on notice last weekend by winning the 59th Tony Bettenhausen Classic at Grundy County Speedway. He did not just win it, he dominated on his way to the largest paying win of his career. Next weekend, Bilderback returns home to Rockford Speedway for the 55th National Short Track Championships. While it is a track where the South Beloit pilot has found much success, Rockford’s marquee 200 lap NSTC Championship feature has eluded him to this point.

It is one of the few races that his uncle, seven-time Rockford Champion Ricky Bilderback never won a NSTC main event at the historic quarter mile paved oval. The name of past NSTC winners is a who’s who of Midwest and National short track racing. Michael’s first career Super Late Model victory came at Rockford in 2012 during the mid-summer All-Star 100, he’s a proven winner. A disappointing sixth place finish after setting quick time in qualifications during the 2019 event did not live up to the expectations for the weekend. Now, Bilderback again has momentum behind him heading into ‘One Great Racing Weekend’.

As noted, there has been no lack of success for Bilderback at Rockford. The four-time Big 8 Late Model Series Champion sits second all-time on the NSTC Big 8 Winner’s List with three Saturday night triumphs. The 2005 Young Lion National Legends Car Champion shifted to Late Models at age 15 and by age 17 he had already won Rockford’s Spring Classic event. With Rockford track championships of his own coming in back to back seasons of 2016 and 2017 and then recording his third at the conclusion of 2019, Bilderback can now complete another trifecta by adding Sunday’s (October 4) NSTC 200 to his Spring Classic and All-Star 100 accomplishments.

Bilderback’s current plan is to race all three days of National Short Track Championships beginning behind the wheel of his weekly late model on Friday night October 2 during the NASCAR Night of Champions and then again in Big 8 competition on Saturday night. Friday night’s 40 lap feature and Saturday’s 108 lap go will lead into Sunday’s Super Late Model 200 lap main event. Bilderback has been held winless thus far in 2020 at Rockford but added a win at Madison International Speedway in August in addition to his Grundy victory a week ago.

Main gates will open at 3pm on Friday October 2 with Faster Than a Speeding Bullet Qualifying at 4pm, racing will begin at 6pm. Saturday’s spectator gates open at 2pm with qualifications at 2:15pm and racing at 5pm. Sunday morning will see gates open at 11am for a fan autograph session, with racing beginning at 1pm on Sunday afternoon. Friday admission prices are $18 for adults, $8 for kids ages 6-11 with ‘tots’ ages five and under admitted free. Adult admission is $22 on Saturday with kids tickets at $11 and ages five and under $4. Sunday prices are $25 for adults, $12 for kids and $6 for tots. Seating is general admission and at a limited capacity. Social distancing is required and masks are recommended. back.there was a great battle for 2nd as Trevor Robinson and Erickson Jr would duke it

had 11 cars and a very tough ﬁeld of drivers would compete for the win. As laps were

winding down, Bowar was able to pass Russell Jr for the lead and try to distance

himself from the ﬁeld. Nick Schmidt and Evink were right behind Russell Jr and

“Beldowski and Hacksaw win the 2 division feature”

Heat 1 was won by Hacksaw Pat Heany in his 1957 Chevy and heat 2 was won by

Jumpin’ Joe Darnell in his 1952 International Harvester. The feature had both Outlaw

and Stocker Divisions in it. Frank Beldowski won the Outlaw division and Hacksaw

won the stocker division.!

Original Sixers

“Hawkins the Hero”

Over 30 Sixers showed up to race. We had for heat winners. We apologize for not

listing their names as this division doesn't have transponders. The A Main feature

looked to be a good race, but on lap 4 a caution ﬂag came out and then again on lap 5.

Another caution ﬂag came out shortly after causing the oﬃcials to shorten the laps on

the feature as the race had taken 40 minutes and with a couple laps to go, Justin

Hawkins was able to get away and get his ﬁrst feature win of the 2020 season

The feature was a great battle as the Jerry Stafford from South Beloit lead in the early going of the race. As the race went on, Jeremy Miller passed for the lead , Michael Bilderback as went with Miller and passed Stafford to grab 2nd. Despite several attempts to take the lead from Miller including on the last lap, Miller held on to get his 1st feature win of the 2020 season.

From lap 1 Terrance Robinson got out to a big lead. On lap 18 the caution came out as Chris Wangrow and Zach Cichon got tangled up coming out of turn 2. On the last lap, Trevor Robinson attempted to pass Terrance Robinson for the lead and lost his brakes and made contact with him. Featherston with a quick move, went to the hard inside passing both Robinson brothers in turn 2 and drove to victory lane.

How did you get into racing?

went to the races when I was little and got hooked

How many years have you been racing? And What Divisions?

I've been racing for 32 years, I've ran RoadRunners, Short Trackers, Sportsmen in 92' and currently. Then i ran a late model for 4 races for a back up car for Bobby Wilberg in mid 90's.

What has been your favorite division to race and your least favorite and why?

My favorite was probably the RoadRunners because there were 30 plus cars back in the day. My least favorite was the short trackers, Those cars are too finicky.

What do you like to do outside of the racetrack?

Spend time with my grand kids

What is your favorite memory at Rockford Speedway?

Short track weekends when they use to be fun in late 80's and early 90's.

What sponsor has been with you the longest and what do they they mean to you?

Gilley's Heating and Air Conditioning has been with me when I started racing in 1987. I worked for Ron Gilley back then and we would take show cars around to different places and parades to show them off. They taught me a lot on how to how support the other sponsors that were on the cars.

What race win would you consider your most prestigious?

My most memorable race win is going to have to be 3 or 4 years ago when I had hit the wall because my brake pedal went to the floor going into turn 3 and I road the wall into turn 4 and broke my LR brake rotor and bent the sway bar and other things. I took a back start in the feature because I didn't know what the car was going to be like and the next thing I know I was passing Brett McCoy with 6 laps to go and got the checkered flag. That was awesome.

What Rockford driver (past or present) do you respect the most?

That is a tough question. I've raced with quite a few people to decide on that so I guess whoever ran me clean would get the most respect.

You always tend to have the nicest cars in whatever you may race throwback cars to Mark Martin/Joe Shear. What makes the so special?

They have always been my my favorite drivers when I was a little kid probably because of the cool paint schemes they had.

Who do you need to thank?

Well I need to thank the Deery's first of all for having a great place to race at, Second of all I need to thank all of my sponsors that have supported me for all of the years I've been racing, Third of all is my family that has supported me for all of these years and especially the ones that go weekly rain or shine. My crew that that spends countless hours on and off the track . Last but not least the fans who support local short track racing. if it wasn't for all the these people we wouldn't have any excitement going on.

Due to the recent COVID-19 (Coronavirus) outbreak, affecting entire nations across the globe, Rockford Speedway along with Big 8 Series officials have been forced to postpone the 43rd Annual Spring Classic set for Saturday, April 18, 2020. The 43rd Spring Classic was slated to begin the Rockford Speedway, Big 8 Late Model Series, and Mid-American Stock Car Series schedules.

"We were put into a situation where we were unable to host the 43rd running of the Spring Classic as scheduled. This is always a highly anticipated event for us, and we look forward to it every year. Unfortunately, this year presents a unique situation that is out of our control," Stated Rockford Speedway GM, David Deery. "We understand that the health and well-being of our fans, drivers, and staff is of the highest concern and we see this decision as being in the best interest of all parties involved,” Concluded Deery.

How did you get into racing?

I grew up at Rockford Speedway, I've been going since I was 2 weeks old I grew up watching my dad and uncle Charlie race.

Who is your favorite NASCAR (or other pro) driver?

Dale Earnhardt Jr. I always liked Dale for who he has become, He had big shoes to fill and had a lot of pressure put on him and I feel he handled it all with class.

Who do you need to thank?

A lot of people. My mom and dad, my brother Travis and everyone who has sponsored me and my fans and of course my wife & kids.

How many years have you been racing? And What Divisions?

This will be my 23rd year. I've race RoadRunners, Hobby Stocks & Sportsmen.

What is your favorite memory at Rockford Speedway?

I would have to say seeing Joe Shear winning his last NSTC with no front clip passing Steve Carlson for the lead and doing it clean, Joe Shear is my racing hero along with my Dad of course.

Which track do you enjoy running the most?

I love racing at every track I've visited, If I had to pick one it would be Lacrosse its big and fast.

Which track do you tend to struggle the most with?

No Doubt Jefferson Speedway, It never used to be, but I struggle a lot there, I still love going there though.

What race win would you consider your most prestigious?

I don't know... all 4 of my NSTC wins mean the most to me, they all have special things about them to me.

What Rockford driver (past or present) do you respect the most?

Well my dad and Joe Shear of course. But other then them Ricky Bilderback, He was extremely fast and clean. I dont remember seeing him run guys up the hill and he was super nice to talk too, He still is when I see him. The other would be Al Papini he was the first Late Model guy to talk to me. I remember he asked me at Brackets one year how my car was and offered me some tires so I could go faster. I will never forget I followed him around at the Machesney Park Mall Car Show talking to him about the up-coming season and unfortunately we lost Al shortly after. He was always nice to me and one heck of a wheel man.

What are your 2020 Plans?

I will be racing my sportsmen again and plan on doing some enduro races. Would also be running the Dells Showdown & Oktoberfest at Lacrosse Speedway.

How did you get into racing?

Besides it being in my blood from my grandpa, uncle and step grandma racing and just always being around it. One day we were walking through the old Machesney Park Mall and there was a display setup for a go kart track up in Broadhead WI. We stopped by and looked and I said I wanna try it and from there it was history.

Who is your favorite NASCAR (or other pro) driver?

I don’t know if I truly have one favorite. I definitely respect any of the guys that have made it to that level that still remember where they came from and how they got there. But i always liked Rusty Wallace when he raced.

Who do you need to thank?

There’s so many people that have helped me throughout my career. But the most important would be my grandpa and Liz Bilderback without them believing in me and their full commitment and support of my racing career I wouldn’t be where I am today.

If you could meet one TV/movie character, who would you choose and why?

I don't know if I can answer that

What is your favorite memory at Rockford Speedway?

Well definitely winning the 2012 all-star 100 which was my first SLM win at Rockford is definitely pretty high on the list. But I think ultimately winning our first Rockford Speedway championship in 2016 is at the top.

Which track is your favorite to travel too in a Limited Late Model or Super Late?

Slinger is always one of the favorites when we get to go there. I also really like WIR it’s a bigger track, but you drive it like a short track with 2 different style corners.

Which track do you struggle the most with?

Jefferson speedway has been toughest track to show up and be fast at. We’ve had good moments but never seem to capitalize on them. So hopefully we can get up there this year and try to compete.

What race win would you consider your most prestigious?

I would have to say our 2012 all star win. Just getting a SLM win at Rockford is awesome.

How did you get your car number (#2)?

When I started racing I always like Rusty Wallace and with my uncle (Ricky Bilderback) being 02 it just kinda worked out.

Which Rockford driver (past or present) do you respect the most?

There are so many amazing racers that raced at Rockford past and present. I have a lot of respect for a lot of the older guys from 80-90 that didn’t have the ease of racing like we do now. They had to build, design or find things that would fit there race-car or try to make it go faster. The creativeness and Ingenuity that those guys had is un-explainable.
